Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin walked into the Indian Treaty Room, stepped up to the podium, and over the next 27 minutes, he reminded the room repeatedly that his loyalty to Donald Trump was total, that there was no daylight between them, that they had been texting that very morning. But loyalty was not the point. Speaking of people he claimed had broken election laws, he declared, we will hunt you down, we will find you, and he threatened election officials with fines, penalties, and prison if they failed to act on information his department would release in 30 days. This was not a plan to secure elections. It was a plan to rig them, dressed up as a national security threat.
The centerpiece was a claim that DHS had identified 250,000 noncitizens registered to vote in four states, California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Nevada, all Democratic strongholds Trump lost. Even if the number were real, and it is not, registration is not voting. In California, officials verify registration and signatures before any ballot counts, and researchers who have studied noncitizen voting find it statistically insignificant. When Georgia checked the names DHS flagged, only 150 of 2,549 had ever voted. The Heritage Foundation’s own fraud database found 77 instances of noncitizen voting across all elections between 1999 and 2023. Mullin’s own letters admit the numbers are unverified, and David Becker explained the figure came from commercial data that routinely produces false matches. Wendy Weiser of the Brennan Center noted he offered no evidence for where the numbers came from. He brought up 400,000 deceased registered voters as a scheme, when it is only the paperwork of people who cannot notify anyone they have died. Then he insisted his claims were not even for debate, because saying something loudly is the only play left when there is no proof to show.
The real danger arrived when he described making security enhancements mandatory, threatening states with lost federal election funding, and, as ABC News reported, previously threatening FEMA counterterrorism grants to force compliance. He promised to scrub voter rolls before and after the election with no oversight over who gets removed, less than four months from the midterms. And he threatened election officials themselves with prosecution and prison, the exact tactic authoritarian movements always use to replace independent judgment with fear. If poll workers can be jailed for doing their jobs, the entire system of election administration begins to collapse. He went after judges too, calling them “activist” and demanding that any “god-fearing” person support him, even as 15 courts, including six Trump appointees, have already blocked these demands. Judge Sparkle Sooknanan wrote that the government had knowingly trampled on the privacy rights of citizens and the sacred right to vote.
Yet the truth kept breaking through. John Solomon, handpicked for Trump’s own election task force, said the Intelligence Committee has zero evidence any foreign power flipped a vote in 2020, 2022, or 2024. Governors and secretaries of state from both parties refused to be intimidated. If Democrats could rig elections, Trump would not sit in the White House with Republicans controlling Congress and the courts. They resort to threats precisely because they cannot win enough legitimate votes to hold power, which means they are not yet in control. November will be here soon, and until then we keep the pressure on, speak the truth, and show up for one another.
