Trump's plan to invalidate the 2026 midterm elections
After millions of Virginians showed up and voted to redraw the state’s congressional maps, a move that could give Democrats a path to winning ten of Virginia’s eleven seats, the President of the United States posted, “A RIGGED ELECTION TOOK PLACE LAST NIGHT IN THE GREAT COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA!” No evidence. No hesitation. This is not a tantrum. It is a rehearsal. He is spending the six months before the midterms conditioning his base to disbelieve any result that doesn’t go his way, the same slow poisoning of the well we watched before January 6th. And the people he is installing around him are playing the same game. His nominee to chair the Federal Reserve, Kevin Warsh, sat before the Senate Banking Committee and refused to answer a simple factual question: Did Donald Trump lose the 2020 election? Not because he doesn’t know the answer. Because the machine requires its members to leave the door open to the lie. Always.
And the cracks in that machine keep widening. The Secretary of the Navy, John Phelan, departed the administration effective immediately with no explanation. His name appears twice in the Epstein flight manifests. Three cabinet secretaries have been fired or forced out in the last two months. And now this. Meanwhile, more than a third of the federal cases brought against Americans arrested during anti-ICE protests have collapsed, debunked by video evidence that directly contradicts what arresting officers swore in their reports. In Chicago alone, prosecutors dropped 75 out of 109 cases. The machinery of fear has limits.
But what gives me the most hope tonight is something that happened 18 years ago. On October 10th, 2008, Senator John McCain was running for president. A supporter grabbed the microphone and called Barack Obama an Arab. McCain shook his head, took the mic back, and said, “No, ma’am. He’s a decent, family man, citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with.” A man running against his opponent for the most powerful office on earth, defending that opponent’s honor in front of his own crowd, because it was the right thing to do. That is the bar. Donald Trump has never once cleared it. And every time the voters are given a real choice, they keep choosing something better. Virginia proved that again last night. November is next.

We are living through a pivotal moment for our country, and my goal is to reach as many people as possible with clear, factual information about what is happening. The more people who understand what is unfolding, the better our chances of pushing back against chaos, cruelty, and corruption ahead of the midterms.

People need to be watching closely on all the many fronts on which Trump (and his smarter minions) are working to undermine a fair election in November. He is an f'ing moron, as his first Secretary of State said, but he is not a mural dyslexic: he can read the writing on the wall. And he is doing everything he can to avoid his electoral fate. None of what he is doing is of course legal or ethical, but those terms mean nothing to Trump.
I have always told my grown children that the things they want don’t just happen. They don’t just fall into place just because you dream it or want it to. It takes planning. It takes effort. It takes the desire to see that dream through. Democracy doesn’t just happen either. Just because we are the land of the free and the home of the brave… Just because we are Americans… Just because we are unique in so many ways does not mean that during this crucial and pivotal moment things will work out. We cannot be so conceited or blind to know that even as Americans, we have to step up at every moment our freedoms and democracy are threatened. We have to step out of line every time basic decency is gaslighted. The threat of this regime is very real, whether it’s touched you personally or not. The dream of resistance and good trouble doesn’t just happen. It takes effort. From everyone.
