Trump's Plan for the MAGA Media Monopoly is Taking Shape

Trump is pushing for a media merger that would give a single company control over more than 80% of local television markets in America.

Nexstar already owns or operates over 200 stations. If they acquire Tegna and its 64 stations, they would blow past the FCC’s 39% household cap that exists specifically to prevent monopolies. This is the same company that pulled Jimmy Kimmel from dozens of affiliates when the White House complained.

Local news is where most Americans still get their information. It is where trust is highest. And now the administration wants to hand that trust to one company already aligned with its messaging. This is exactly how media consolidation worked in Russia. Putin did not shut down independent outlets overnight. He installed allies at the top of media companies, quietly bought out regional stations, and used regulators to threaten anyone who refused to play along. By the early 2000s, nearly all major television networks were controlled by the Kremlin.
