At 7:45 last night, Donald Trump stood at a podium in Ohio and told the crowd that his political opponents were people he was going to “put down once and for all.” He had arrived 45 minutes late after his motorcade changed its route to avoid protesters. Within minutes, what appeared to be a serious mental health crisis was unfolding on live television. He accused Democrats of trying to kill him, called Biden a “fake president,” and said Republicans would win and “shove it up their ass.” Then he promised every adult American $5,000 if Republicans keep both chambers of Congress. We have to take him at his word while hoping he is just being provocative, because history has already taught us what happens when leaders describe their opponents as threats that must be eliminated. This was the President of the United States, speaking behind the presidential seal, showing us how dark the next chapter could become.
The money is part of the same strategy as the threats. Roughly 245 million adults would make that promise a $1.20 trillion bill, and Trump cannot simply spend that money without approval. The $2,000 tariff checks he previously promised never arrived either. He has already built in his excuse: when these checks never come, he will blame Democrats. At the same time, he is warning that a Democratic victory will bring another Great Depression, trying to frighten people into voting for him while offering money he cannot send. He pointed at the press, let the crowd’s hostility build, and attacked Kaitlan Collins again. He needs his supporters to believe that every journalist who contradicts him is lying and that only he can be trusted. If the results go against him, that becomes the foundation for another stolen-election narrative. We have already lived through what followed those lies, and this time he has the power of the federal government behind him. The fight will not end when the votes are counted. We will also face his efforts to keep duly elected members of Congress from being seated.
We are not helpless, and I refuse to let him convince us that we are. I know what speaking out costs because I have lived with the threats for a year and a half. I also know that silence costs more. We can vote, get louder, and, if we can afford it without hardship, fund the candidates, nonprofits, and independent voices defending our rights. I am asking people to think beyond my work and support the writers, journalists, and podcasters who need to survive what comes next. While Trump was trying to make the rest of us feel his fear, Tom Morello’s Power to the People Festival brought close to 20,000 people together in Maryland, with Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, the Foo Fighters, and others standing for freedom, justice, and equality. That was a show of resistance. In 31 days, we have the power to begin making Trump face consequences.
