After days spent largely hiding from public view, the President of the United States reemerged for a campaign rally at a police academy in Garden City, New York. The event was billed as the unveiling of the FBI’s 2025 Crime Statistics Report, but over 70 minutes it became a campaign rally in which he praised loyalists, attacked the press, and admitted, “I hate reading these boring speeches.” And then came the most disturbing moment of the day, when an 80-year-old man whose name appears more than 38,000 times in the Epstein files became fixated on the young women who work in the White House. “These young, beautiful girls,” he said, over and over, standing in a room full of law enforcement officers, many of them women. “Now, I’m not supposed to say beautiful, but what the hell?” He could not stop himself.
The crime report he came to tout showed declines in violent crime, murder, and robbery, and Trump took credit for all of it, calling it the largest single-year drop since 1937. What he forgot to mention is that violent crime has been falling since 2022, more than two years before he returned to office, and that during his 2024 campaign he called these very same FBI statistics “fake news,” “phony,” and “a fraud.” When shown data in 2023 that crime was dropping, he had said, “There is no way that crime went down.” He simply says whatever serves him in the moment, trusting that the outlandishness will cover the lie. The officers in that room played their part, cheering when he called Democrats “Dumocrats,” booing their own sitting governor, and turning to jeer at the journalists in the back when he pointed and said, “look at all that fake news.”
But the world he describes does not exist, not even inside his own company. Truth Social’s traffic fell 36 percent last month compared to a year ago. Trump Media shares have collapsed from around $60 to roughly $9, with a net loss of $238 million in a single quarter, and the scheme to sell traders early access to his posts drew barely ten customers. His most devoted fans are growing tired of him, and the donors he expected to pay up are quietly stepping off a sinking ship. He rounded out the event by warning the room that what is happening in their state is “a guaranteed failure,” and though he meant New York, he was describing himself. Because for the average American, the ones not getting richer from his inner circle, life is actually simple: we want to do right by our neighbors, keep our families safe, afford our homes and groceries, and believe the people around us still care. Trump wants us divided, looking across the street and seeing enemies instead of looking up at the people accumulating power while the rest of us fight over what remains. We do not have to participate in that. We can choose each other instead. In two and a half months, we decide what the future looks like.
