At 2:02 in the morning, while the country slept, Senator Lindsey Graham’s office announced he had died hours earlier. The news landed as a genuine shock, coming while the nation’s attention was fixed on Mitch McConnell’s nearly four-week medical absence. But the most revealing response came less than ninety minutes later, when the President posted his own message declaring Graham “dead” and himself “so sad.” By the time Trump appeared on Meet the Press with Kristen Welker, he had cast himself as the true victim, returning again and again not to the man he called family but to what the death cost his agenda. “This is a big blow to the SAVE America Act, let me tell you.” He described their final call as a legislative progress report, rambling in circles about Graham sounding “a little tired, but perfect,” unable to hold the thread of a dying man’s life for more than seconds before pulling it back to himself.
The performance of mourning collapsed within hours. Throughout the same day he posted a video titled “DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISM MUST BE CRIMINALIZED; LEADERS DEPORTED,” a fake image of Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris in red hats reading “I lost to Trump,” three pictures of fighter jets, and a boast about a 59 percent approval rating. This is who the man is. And there was once a version of Graham who understood exactly that. In December 2015, he called Trump “a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot” and said to tell him to go to hell. He called him a kook, unfit for office. On January 6th, he stood on the Senate floor and said, “Enough is enough. Count me out.” He was right every single time, then abandoned all of it within weeks, golfing at Mar-a-Lago and admitting to the New York Times he made the turn to stay “relevant.” He watched Trump mock his best friend John McCain, a prisoner of war, alive and dead, and stood beside him anyway. Kavanaugh and Barrett sit on the Supreme Court because of Graham. He cheered the war in Iran, promising “we’re going to make a ton of money.” He erased his own legacy deliberately, every time he chose power over principle, and history will be honest even if the eulogies are not.
On Friday, the administration gutted the Endangered Species Act, erasing a four-decade definition of harm so oil, mining, and logging interests can move into wildlife habitats as if an animal survives without a home. The Senate reconvenes with Todd Blanche facing confirmation, and with Graham’s seat empty, Republicans cannot lose a single vote.
Graham said country first means doing the hard thing even when it hurts, then could not follow his own words. We still can. Every day we choose resistance, we choose the path he abandoned, the one that leads somewhere worth going. That is why I still have hope for America. You should, too.
