Trump's lie filled State of the Union was a national embarrassment

For one hour and forty-eight minutes, the longest State of the Union address in American history, Trump stood before the country and delivered what amounted to a campaign rally built entirely on lies. He claimed the economy had achieved the biggest turnaround in history, while millions of Americans are choosing between rent and groceries. He suggested, again, that the two-term limit might not apply to him. He told the room that people are begging him to stop winning so much. And then, moments after honoring military heroes who earned their recognition through genuine sacrifice, he told the country that he has always wanted the Congressional Medal of Honor for himself, but has been informed he cannot give it to himself. He is not even hiding what he is anymore.

The most chilling moment came when he demanded every legislator stand to affirm that the government’s first duty is to citizens, not immigrants, then pointed at the Democrats who remained seated and told them they should be ashamed. It was a loyalty test conducted on national television from the presidential podium. He called the Somali community in Minnesota “pirates” who “ransacked” the state. He pushed his voter suppression bill by claiming the only reason anyone would oppose voter ID is because they want to cheat. And he never once mentioned Alex Pretti, Renee Good, or Ruben Ray Martinez, the American citizens killed during his own administration’s immigration raids, because acknowledging them would mean admitting that his policies are killing the people he claims to protect.

Trump’s approval sits at 36 percent and falling. The Supreme Court struck down his tariffs. The room may have cheered, but the country is watching, and the gap between what he says and what people are living grows wider by the day.
