Trump's latest stunt was deeply revealing

The President of the United States opened the doors of the Oval Office, took two bags of McDonald’s from a DoorDash driver named Sharon Simmons, turned to the cameras, and asked, “This doesn’t look staged, does it?” It was staged. All of it. Sharon had been invited, cleared through security, handed a red T-shirt, and walked to the doors for the photo op. And for the next fifteen minutes, what unfolded was one of the most unintentionally honest press conferences of this presidency. Because Sharon Simmons, a grandmother who has completed more than 14,000 deliveries and whose husband is undergoing cancer treatment, turned out to be the only honest person on that lawn.

When he tried to pull her into a culture war debate on live television, asking whether men should play in women’s sports, she looked at him and said, “No, I’m here about no tax on tips.” One commenter online called her “the most skilled politician in Washington.” Meanwhile, Trump used her husband’s cancer to validate an AI-generated image he had posted the night before depicting himself as Jesus Christ. “I do make people better,” he said, then pivoted from the deleted image to her $11,000 tax refund to her husband’s chemotherapy, all in one unbroken sentence. He handed her a $100 bill on camera, a man worth $6.3 billion whose family has generated at least $4 billion from the presidency, and pointed at the reporter who reminded him to tip.

Two and a half hours before this performance, a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz had begun. Oil was surging toward $100 a barrel. The woman standing next to him drives for a living and will feel every cent of that increase at the pump. And when he was done with the McDonald’s bags and the photo op, he moved on to what was really on his mind: a UFC cage fight he’s building on the White House lawn for his 80th birthday, Cuba as his next target, and the fact that his strongman allies keep falling. Poland. Brazil. And yesterday, Hungary. The model he admired is collapsing. And he knows what’s coming in November.
