At the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, “God Bless the U.S.A.” played as the President of the United States before taking the short walk to the podium. Where most presidents speak for fifteen minutes, poke fun at themselves, and end on a serious note about why a free press matters, Donald Trump spoke for more than an hour, treating it like a campaign rally. He mocked CNN’s Kaitlan Collins for never smiling, called Don Lemon the “dumbest man on television,” and made a joke about Anderson Cooper being gay. Most of it was met with silence. After one joke fell completely flat, he looked up and asked, “Who the hell wrote that?” Because even he recognized how bad it was.
But the most important moment came before he ever reached the podium. Wolf Blitzer presented the Katharine Graham Award for Courage to the Wall Street Journal reporters who first surfaced the lewd birthday letter bearing Trump’s signature in Jeffrey Epstein’s album, with Trump seated just a few feet away, forced to listen. Blitzer did not soften it. Despite Trump’s threats, the Journal published the story, Trump filed a $20 billion lawsuit that revealed a reporter’s home address, forcing her family to relocate, and they were kicked off Air Force One. Nearly every award that night was for reporting about him. He sat through more than an hour of praise for the very people he has tried to sue, subpoena, or bury into silence. And that is the whole point. He does not attack journalists because they are wrong. He attacks them because they are one of the few groups he still cannot control, and a free press gets in the way of rewriting history and hiding his failures. Every strongman comes for the press first. Goebbels seized the newspapers. Putin jails or exiles reporters. Orbán simply handed the media to his friends. Trump is taking the worst parts of all of them.
And at the very end, he pulled out a red cap reading “Trump 2028,” joking about a third term the Constitution forbids. Authoritarians rarely hide their intentions. They announce them, then wait to see if anyone stops them. But here is why this bad night might matter. His decline is accelerating at the worst possible time for him, and he is no longer able to hide it. That is not a reason for despair. It is our opening. The more he lashes out, the more he exposes himself, and the more people see, the harder it becomes for the propaganda to hold. Our job is simple: we do not have to invent anything. We only have to keep showing people what he says and does, and protect the reporters and independent voices telling the truth, so he cannot starve them out or scare them into silence. He was celebrating and attacking the very thing that will be his undoing: the truth, and the people who will never stop searching for it.
