At 1:01 this afternoon, the cameras inside the Oval Office found Donald Trump slouched behind the Resolute Desk, heavy-eyed and staring into the distance. The event was supposed to be about savings accounts for American children. Instead, children stood beside him while he called Democrats communists, asked a reporter about celebrating Vladimir Putin’s birthday, and threatened Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Barack Obama. “I can do whatever I want, if I want,” he said. He claimed he had stopped “the total obliteration of the world.” When a reporter asked about a hurricane forecast to hit the Gulf Coast and his plans to attend an Alabama football game, he answered, “I hadn’t heard about a hurricane.” He couldn’t seem to locate Michael Dell standing close to him, and practically every time someone else spoke, his eyes began to close. This was the President of the United States, surrounded by wealthy supporters who were there to praise him.
There is nothing wrong with helping children save for their future. I spent time going through the available information, and the $1,000 contribution could make a difference for a child who qualifies. But families deserve answers about where the information used to open these accounts came from, who has access to it, and what the app collects before they agree to use it. A public program should serve children, not become another monument to the president. His grandiosity is not separate from his authoritarian ambitions. It is their foundation. If he believes he saved the world, every law broken and every norm shattered becomes, in his mind, the cost of greatness.
What I keep coming back to tonight is that there were children in that room. I think about my own children and the example being set for every child in this country. I firmly believe a blue wave is coming, but we cannot treat it as a guarantee. We have to keep having these uncomfortable conversations, make clear where we stand, and welcome people who are finally waking up and want to do better. The future those children inherit is not yet decided. What we do now, including showing up to vote, will help decide it.
