At 9:54 in the morning, Donald Trump left his self-imposed isolation inside the White House to spend Saturday at his golf club outside Washington. At the golf course, he unraveled across five increasingly erratic Truth Social posts. He claimed he had just aced a cognitive screening at Walter Reed that he supposedly takes every six months. He called Democrats communists, wrote an imaginary speech crowning himself “the best political athlete of all time,” and attacked New York Times correspondent Maggie Haberman as one of the most unattractive people in the news business. It all began because Haberman, appearing on MS NOW alongside Jonathan Swan, had simply told the truth. She said that Trump’s health is a black box, that he is 80, and that he no longer speaks with the crispness he once did. That was all it took to send the commander in chief spiraling for an entire afternoon while American forces remained engaged in a dangerous conflict in the Middle East.
But this was not merely the ranting of a bitter, compromised man. It was the latest step in a systematic effort to silence dissent, and it is accelerating. On Friday night, the Department of Justice subpoenaed four New York Times reporters, delivering some subpoenas to their homes and ordering them before a Manhattan grand jury, over a story revealing that the Qatari-gifted Air Force One lacked anti-missile capabilities and that Trump had to switch planes mid-trip during the NATO summit. This is not about wrongdoing. It is about embarrassment, harassment, and intimidation. It fits a continuing pattern stretching back to January 2025 of harassing and suing journalists and media companies. The U.S. Press Freedom Tracker documented more than 170 assaults on journalists in 2025, and trust in news has fallen to 28 percent, the lowest ever recorded.
This is what it looks like when a government moves to silence dissent, not all at once but post by post, subpoena by subpoena, arrest by arrest. Every attack is a message to the next person. The point is not winning in court. It is making reporters, writers, creators, and everyday Americans question whether the next thing they say is worth losing everything for. And if truth stops reaching the people, propaganda replaces it, and the people can no longer act. That is exactly what they want.
If you have been on the sidelines, this is the moment to step off them. Fund the people still defending the First Amendment, both legacy and independent, because protecting the press is how truth stays alive when every other system is being captured. Trump is posting these threats because he is scared. Regimes on the right side of history do not behave this way when they feel secure. They do it when the walls are closing in, and the midterms are drawing near. They are not coming for our words because they are winning. They are coming for our words because they know what happens when enough of us keep using them.
