Trump's handlers are running out of ways to hide what is happening to him

The President of the United States spent his day posting a fake video of himself throwing Stephen Colbert into a dumpster, sharing another threat aimed at Greenland, and declaring at a rally, “I don’t mind being called a brilliant, total tyrant dictator, but I don’t want to be called dumb.” He said that out loud, to a crowd of supporters, and meant it. Being called a tyrant does not bother him. Being called a dictator does not bother him. Being called dumb is the one thing that gets to him. He then launched into yet another retelling of his cognitive test, this time with different animals than the last time he told the story, a math problem he acted out for the crowd, and the claim that a doctor who had been giving the test for twenty years had never seen anyone ace it. Every time he tells this story, it changes. And every time he tells it, unprompted, to an audience that did not ask, it reveals more than he intends.

Then he announced he would not be attending his own son’s wedding. He canceled his weekend golf trip. He is staying at the White House over Memorial Day while his national security team quietly cancels their holiday plans. CBS reported that military officials are awaiting further orders on Iran. And Reuters revealed that when Trump posted in April that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” a European ally went to the State Department for an urgent answer: was the president talking about using a nuclear weapon? The officials there told them they did not know what he meant. The people whose job is to stand between a reckless sentence and a catastrophe could not tell one of our oldest allies what their own president was planning.

Tulsi Gabbard resigned as Director of National Intelligence, the fourth cabinet member to leave, and all four have been women. And in the middle of it all, more lawsuits have been filed to block the $1.776 billion fund Trump created to pay his loyalists, with plaintiffs arguing it is unconstitutional and was never authorized by Congress. The courts are holding. The resistance is growing. And the man at the center of all of it is publicly unraveling and telling the world that being called a dictator is fine with him. November is five months away.
