Trump's extreme narcissism was on full display for the whole world to see

President Trump turned what was supposed to be a solemn remembrance ceremony for Angel Families into a rambling political rally. Within seconds of calling the occasion “truly solemn,” he attacked the press, made unsourced claims about criminals entering the country, ranted about the 2020 election being rigged, and told grieving parents to their faces that their children would still be alive if Democrats hadn’t stolen the election. He compared those mothers and fathers to foreign dictators he’s met, drifted into attacks on sanctuary cities, mail-in ballots, and men in women’s sports, and even told the room he has “suffered for the country,” equating his presidency with the loss of a murdered child. The families who flew across the country expecting to have their loved ones honored were instead used as props in a political narrative that had very little to do with them.

This was not a memorial. It was a calculated political operation designed to scapegoat immigrants and deepen division, using real grief as a backdrop. Study after study shows that violent crime by undocumented immigrants is not the driving force behind murder in this country, but Trump is not interested in data. He is interested in fear. And as the midterms approach, we should expect this kind of propaganda to intensify. The question is whether we let it consume us or whether we ground ourselves, speak the truth, and refuse to normalize what should never be normal.
