Trump’s EGO and SELF-OBSESSION just got a lot darker

On Labor Day, Donald Trump shared old footage of himself near Ground Zero, presented as though it had been filmed hours after the attacks. It was actually taken two days later. He was wearing an immaculate black suit and a crisp white shirt, telling a reporter he had 100 men working there and another 100 on the way. Hours later, he told Trey Gowdy that he went down almost immediately and “worked long and hard.” Nearly 25 years have passed, and investigations have found no evidence to substantiate his claims that he joined the rescue effort or sent hundreds of workers. Former FDNY deputy chief Richard Alles told PolitiFact, “I was there for several months. I have no knowledge of his being down there.” Yet every retelling moves Trump closer to the rubble and gives him a bigger role.

This is a pattern that reaches back to the day itself, when he went on television and boasted that his building was now the tallest in downtown Manhattan. Even that was wrong. In the years that followed came the claims about predicting the attacks, helping clear rubble, losing hundreds of friends, and watching thousands of Muslims celebrate in New Jersey, a story investigators could not substantiate. There was recovery money for his company, too, while a city review found no record of his promised Twin Towers Fund donation. He keeps placing himself at the center of a tragedy whose meaning should belong to the families still missing someone at the dinner table, the firefighters who climbed those stairs, and the workers who spent months breathing toxic dust. Now, as the 25th anniversary approaches, reports say he changed plans to attend the Ground Zero ceremony after organizers upheld their rule against political speeches. He is expected at the Pentagon instead. Even a day of remembrance becomes another question of whether Donald Trump gets the microphone.

We cannot let his need for attention consume everything we have left. My mother asked me to remind everyone to check their voter registration, especially with reports of Texans finding themselves on the state’s “suspense” list. Check now, and keep checking. Then, for once, let’s leave room for a laugh. In Victoria, British Columbia, where my family has spent so many summers, someone hung a sign over a public restroom reading “The President Donald J. Trump Memorial.” The city removed it, but the story had already traveled. After all those years of trying to make himself a hero, someone gave him a memorial above a set of toilets. Humor has always been a tool of resistance. It reaches people who might tune out another political argument and reminds us that we still see through the vanity and the corruption. We can keep paying attention, protect our ability to vote, and still find ways to laugh together.

We are living through a pivotal moment for our country, and my goal is to reach as many people as possible with clear, factual information about what is happening. The more people who understand what is unfolding, the better our chances of pushing back against chaos, cruelty, and corruption ahead of the midterms.

I’m fighting to save our country (before it’s too late).

I’ll see you tomorrow,
