At 2:15 p.m. local time in Ankara, Donald Trump stepped out of Qatar’s Air Force One and gave the world an image that was hard to explain away. He gripped the handrail, watched each step, wandered off the ceremonial blue carpet, stopped, and had to be physically guided back into place by Turkish President Erdogan. The White House later posted edited footage that removed the moments where Trump appeared lost, but the damage was already visible. This was the President of the United States arriving at a NATO summit while one of the world’s longest-serving authoritarian leaders steadied him, redirected him, and then welcomed him into a meeting where American power was about to be treated less like a democratic responsibility than a personal favor.
What followed was even more alarming than the scene on the tarmac. Trump admitted he was “very disappointed with NATO” because allies refused to support the war he started against Iran, then suggested he might not have attended the summit at all if it had not been hosted by his “friend” Erdogan. Erdogan immediately appeared to collect the reward: renewed consideration of F-35 fighter jets for Turkey, despite Turkey’s purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems and its removal from the F-35 program in 2019, along with Trump’s promise to lift sanctions because “we don’t want to sanction friends.” When asked about American technology sitting beside Russian weapons, Trump said he had “no concerns at all about anything” and praised Turkey’s roads. He dismissed Russia’s war in Ukraine by saying it “doesn’t affect the United States,” complained that battlefield images from Pete Hegseth “don’t help the look,” and threatened Europe over Greenland, saying America could remove soldiers from the continent if NATO did not bend toward his demand.
The pattern did not stop overseas. At home, Trump’s Justice Department sent threatening letters to election officials in all fifty states and Washington, D.C. over noncitizen voting, even though it is already illegal and Brennan Center research found it accounted for roughly 0.0001 percent of votes in the jurisdictions examined. Then the same disregard for rules reached the World Cup, where Trump publicly pushed FIFA to overturn a red card he admitted he did not understand. These stories may look separate at first: NATO, sanctions, elections, soccer. But together they show the same danger, a president who treats institutions as props, allies as obstacles, rules as optional, and public responsibility as something to bend around his own grievances.
