At 7:09 Friday night, the President of the United States launched into an hour and 20 minutes of chaos, pausing to mock “the gay national anthem,” to warn the crowd he would be impeached if Democrats take back Congress, and to declare that there is no Republican Party anymore. It is all MAGA. He was not exaggerating. He was describing what he has built: a movement where no internal check, no institutional voice, no one in the room is allowed to say no. Earlier that same day, his Pentagon showed us exactly what that unchecked power looks like when it reaches the last independent voices standing between the American military and state-run propaganda.
They fired three journalists from Stars and Stripes, the military newspaper that has served American troops since the Civil War. Their offense was saying that the troops deserve the truth, that they work for the military community and not for the Pentagon or any administration. When leadership ordered the paper’s longtime publisher, an Army veteran of 19 years, to fire his own editor and reporter, he refused, so they fired him too, and installed an active-duty public affairs officer in his place. They dismantled something that endured through Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan under both parties. General Eisenhower himself defended the paper’s independence in the middle of World War II, because he understood soldiers fighting for democracy needed the truth, not the version that flattered their generals. Now troops overseas may be left with no independent news at all.
The timing tells the story. On the day the Pentagon pushed out the truth, Trump showed us what he intends to fill the space with, pulling out “The Snake,” a poem he stole from a Black civil rights activist and twisted into a weapon to teach his followers that compassion is foolishness and cruelty is wisdom. Trump himself reminded the crowd that he is on the ballot in November. It is our chance to show Donald Trump and his enablers that we have had enough and that there are consequences for the corruption and destruction.
