As our small group of seniors has protested weekly for a year now outside our church-founded retirement community in SW FL what disgusts me most, as you have said, is those who pretend we’re not there. I think, as Europeans, we need to understand that the American electoral system and government authorities, are very different from, certainly mainland, Europe. I cannot think of a single European democracy where either the president/king/queen/prime minister has as much power as the US president. Also the electoral systems on the European mainland are very different. The US has more or less copied the UK 'first-past-the-post' system, which leads to either white or blac, or in this case blue or red, and leads to much more polarisation than a system of proportional representation. The former makes it easier to rule since one of the (usually 2) parties will have an absolute majority. The check on that in the US is when the parties in the majority in congrss/senate are different and different from the president, although this can also cause absolute paralysis due to a strict partisan attitude. On mainland Europe it is rare for one party to have an absolute majority, which leads to coalition forming and inevitably compromise with less chance of polarisation (I am not saying it's impossible). It makes creating a government more onerous (particularly Belgium is a good example), but creates a more 'middle of the road' government. So part of the problem lies in the US election system.
Not to mention the electoral college and gerrymandering. With these two things are "free and fair elections" are more tenuous than ever. And when people believe their vote doesn't matter, they don't vote. We are slipping...
