At 5 in the morning, an interview Donald Trump was warned not to give went live. “A lot of people said, ‘Don’t do this interview,’” he admitted, and within minutes it was clear why. Confronted with the accusation that he is literally building monuments to himself across Washington, the president did not deny it. He agreed. “That’s true. Nobody will do it once I’m gone.” He bragged about his gold ballroom, then slipped, describing “nuclear concrete” built to survive a nuclear attack. He is not just building a ballroom. He is building himself a fortress, amid reports he has grown fearful of retaliation after starting a new forever war. When asked what would happen if a president simply refused to leave after 2028, Trump laughed: “It would be awfully tough to get you out. Nobody would be able to get you out.”
What he is doing to the landscape of Washington is what he is doing to everything else: tearing down what came before him and replacing it with himself. This week the administration dismantled a beloved public sculpture by an artist who died just last year, and announced construction begins in two weeks on a 250-foot arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, casting a shadow over the resting place of our war dead. He knows he can never compete with those buried there, so he wants to overshadow them. It makes him look exactly as he is: small and weak. Asked about the arch’s size, he said, “I’d like it to be the biggest one of all.”
But buried in a Rose Garden speech this week, Trump handed us a gift. He said he won’t get serious about campaigning until the final 30 days, because “people forget.” We are exactly two months from the midterms. He is giving himself one. That means we have double the time he does, and every conversation we start and every door we knock on before October is ground he will never make up. His incompetence is a strategic gift. And the message is already reaching people: Democrats lead the generic ballot by six to seven points, the largest margin since the 2018 blue wave, while 65% of Americans are disgusted by his vanity projects. If you are tired, I understand. But taking back Congress won’t fix everything, and it will slow the destruction and bring back accountability. We are two months from telling this president, and the world, that his grasp on our country has come to an end, that we the people control it, not a man obsessed with a gold-plated ballroom.
