Trump turned International Women's Day into a War on Women's Rights

At 5:22 in the morning on International Women’s Day, the President of the United States posted on Truth Social that he would refuse to sign a single bill into law until Congress passes the most punishing version of the SAVE America Act. No mail-in voting except for military, illness, disability, or travel. Proof of citizenship to register. Photo ID at the polls. And buried inside a bill supposedly about voting, lines about transgender children and women’s sports, because the cruelty is always the point. Noncitizen voting is already illegal. It has been for over a century. This is not about protecting elections. It is about rigging them before a single vote is cast.

The SAVE America Act would affect women more than most, because women are far more likely to carry mismatched documents from marriages, divorces, and name changes, creating a paper trail that is expensive to maintain and nearly impossible to reconstruct on short notice. And a Republican senator, Thom Tillis, went on CNN and warned the country that the real power behind all of it is Stephen Miller, an unelected advisor he called “out of his depth” and a “big problem” who is “calling the shots” across the entire administration.

Trump chose to do all of this on International Women’s Day. From before dawn to after dark, he spent the day hammering away at the right to vote while the country burns around him. But women have faced this before. After Reconstruction, poll taxes, literacy tests, and grandfather clauses gutted the electorate. The architecture of the SAVE Act follows the same blueprint. And if history has taught us anything, it is that women never stop fighting. Not just for themselves, but for every generation that follows.
