Trump says "I love the inflation" as families struggle to afford groceries

He wasn't joking

From the Oval Office yesterday, the President of the United States was asked whether he was concerned that annual inflation had just hit 4.2 percent, the highest level in three years and nearly double what it was a year ago. His answer: “No, I love it. The numbers were great. You know what I really love? I love the inflation.” The man who promised to bring prices down on day one looked into a camera from the most powerful chair in the world and said he loves the thing that is making groceries unaffordable, rents impossible, and survival itself a monthly arithmetic problem for millions of American families. By afternoon, he was already trying to walk it back, claiming his words were taken “out of context.” But the country had already heard it. And no amount of spin can make us forget.

That wasn’t the only thing he said from that chair. He called the presidents who came before him “very stupid people” while sitting in the room where wars were ended and civil rights battles were fought. He insisted that his crowd on the National Mall was bigger than Martin Luther King Jr.’s. And in one of the most surreal moments of his presidency, he detailed the strikes he was ordering on Iran, “we hit them hard yesterday and we’re going to hit them again hard today,” and then, minutes later, when asked what he wished for ahead of his 80th birthday, he said, “Peace for the whole world.” He has learned he can wish for peace out loud while ordering bombs to be dropped, because it is all smoke and mirrors.

And behind the performance, he signed the Secure America Act, funneling an astonishing amount of money to ICE and Border Patrol for the entirety of his presidency, enough to carry out whatever he plans before, during, and after the midterms. This is the whiplash of living under a leader this volatile. Hearing him say he loves inflation while families are crushed by it. Hearing him wish for peace while ordering strikes. The whole point of the smoke is to make us doubt what we can see. So we say what is actually happening, out loud, to our neighbors and coworkers and strangers, every single day. We are not imagining the prices. We are not imagining the bombs. And we are not alone. November is coming.
