In a CNBC interview, the President of the United States grew visibly sweaty as the questions turned to the billions his family has earned since he returned to office. Handed an easy chance to reassure Americans that his family keeps a clear line between public office and private profit, he did the opposite. Explaining why he feels sorry for his children, he volunteered something no ethics lawyer would ever advise a president to say: “Almost anything they do, they have inside information.” His financial disclosures show more than two billion dollars in revenue in 2025. He could not name the firms managing his money or say what rules he was supposed to follow. On the eve of America’s 250th birthday, he sat in the Oval Office and used the oath he swore to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution as a business model, and asked the country to feel sorry for his sons because people keep noticing.
That same day, his handpicked U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced a felony indictment against a 67-year-old three-time Olympic canoeist for touching a piece of the Reflecting Pool’s paint that was already peeling off the bottom. The charge carries up to ten years. When a reporter asked how she could square this with the more than 1,000 January 6 rioters Trump pardoned, people who beat police officers, she snapped, “Are you really talking about January 6? Who’s next? Not you!” She couldn’t answer, because the answer indicts the entire regime. This is a concocted story to shift blame for the administration’s own botched vanity project. Even Republican Senator Thom Tillis asked, “What freakin’ parallel universe did I wake up in?” You don’t have to commit a crime in Trump’s America to be dragged through the system. You just have to be a convenient fall guy for his incompetence.
But this week, others honored their oaths at a cost. Air Force Major Jason Watson became the first active-duty commissioned officer in American history to publicly call for a president’s impeachment, standing in uniform on the Capitol steps and reciting the oath he swore over twenty years ago before being handcuffed. He knew it could cost him his career, his pension, and his freedom, and he did it anyway. And Jack Smith spoke publicly for the first time, warning of “an attack on the rule of law different in kind and scope to anything I’ve seen in my lifetime,” and making clear he will not be intimidated and remains ready to bring his case to trial. Tomorrow, America turns 250. That anniversary belongs to all of us. The people who honored their oaths this week have shown us the way. Now it is our turn, and November is when we answer.
