At 8:07 last night, the President of the United States shared his first and only social media post of the entire day, a startling silence from a man who routinely posts dozens of times, often through the middle of the night. After returning to America under what is now reported as an extreme threat to his safety, Donald Trump spent the day behind the White House gates. And when he finally spoke to the country, it was not about the NATO summit, the threats against him, or a single duty of the presidency. It was about himself. He announced that Palm Beach International Airport had been renamed The President Donald J. Trump International Airport.
But the post is not the whole story. To celebrate, his son Eric landed at 5:01 in the morning on a plane the family calls Trump Force One, racing to beat a UPS cargo plane so that the first aircraft to touch down under the new name would carry the Trump brand. On Fox and Friends, Eric called the renaming only slightly controversial, saying nothing of the lawsuits, complaints, and opposition that led to this moment. The FAA changed not only the name but also the airport code, from PBI to DJT, at an estimated rebrand cost of $ 5.5 million, with Florida covering roughly half. A 35 page licensing agreement approved four to three by the Palm Beach County commission reveals what this is truly for. The Trump Organization filed three trademark applications months in advance, gained control over which vendors sell merchandise, secured veto power over any biographical material displayed inside, and imposed a non-disparagement clause barring anything that could tarnish his reputation. The trademarks cover watches, jewelry, coins, cuff links, suitcases, neckties, and even plastic slippers for the security line. On paper, the airport is not paying license fees directly to the Trump. But as Florida State law professor Jake Linford noted, the restrictions cover goods, not services, and his company still controls which vendors are approved. The money simply flows under a different name on the receipt. A name that served that community for nearly half a century is gone, replaced by three letters that cannot be criticized and a story only his own people are allowed to tell.
This is what authoritarian regimes do. They make you see their power everywhere until pushing back feels impossible. And while he spent his only words on an airport bearing his name, our country is reeling from a parasite it can no longer properly track. Cyclosporiasis has produced more than 2,000 confirmed cases across at least 18 states, with Michigan approaching 1,200 in roughly 2 weeks, about 20 times its normal annual count. The CDC has lost more than a quarter of its workforce since January 2025, and as of July 2025 it made tracking this exact parasite optional, removing it from required surveillance. The federal count still shows 145 cases through mid June while states report more than two thousand. Nobody knows the source, and ordinary Americans are building their own databases to connect the dots.
They found millions for an airport and took away the money to track a parasite. That is looting. But it will not last. The midterms are coming.
