Last Thursday, one of the loudest voices in American right-wing media sat down for an interview on a little-known political podcast in Canada, and said something that would have been unthinkable not long ago.
We in UK are in chaos. A charming nice man without an ability to control his rather vociferous party has had to resign. He is likely to be replaced by a very able man who has done great things as a mayor. We will have to wait and see.
USA must stop idolising television News readers and instead look to people who know their jobs from bottom up and will be able to govern knowledgeably and without needing to line their own pockets.
The republican ideal is to be as rich as possible as quickly as possible while stepping on people to get there. They don’t seem to mind about “The People” who voted them in.
Trump is now wading in and telling us the reason Keir Starmer failed is he didn’t help Trump with his Iranian war !! Well on that count I am extremely proud of Keir Starmer !
Sadly true. I lived in the U.S for many years and used to wait in vain for world news. Local team results, Highschool team results , unchallenging tit-bits from around the State..........and finally , someone's Parrot who sounded like some celebrity when it squawked . God bless P.B.S and the Lerner News Hour.
I quite agree with you Charlotte. I didn't care for Starmer's policies but thought he was a decent man. I just hope that that gobby Northerner Angela Rayner doesn't toss her hat in the leadership contest. We'll have to wait and see.
As for the orange Hitler sticking his nose.in our affairs, back off Trump, and MYOB.
Thank you, Heather, for stating it plainly: Tucker Carlson is not to be trusted, ever. Most of us know that, but there will be others who will think, "Why not," if he decides to run for office. Some people never learn.
Tucker Carlson in a vile, opportunistic person. This is known by his record. That said, I recall a news story when Saddam Hussain was being lead up to the gallows to be hanged in a nasty retribution scene that was recorded. Guards were yelling obscenities towards Hussain and hitting him with shoes (a major insult in that culture) as he was being led to his death. One unknown person there said stop! This is a man about to die! Show some form of basic dignity! He will be gone soon, do not be him!
That really stuck with me over all these years. Of all people, to show any level of compassion to a brutal human with his history of violence shocked me. Basic kindness was not worthy for this man. Buy they backed off, did what they were there to do.
Revenge can be anticlimactic and lower all human standards. Justice is a different thing. I hope for justice, that somehow people like Carson are seen for who they are, and instead of being outraged (which I admit on a daily basis), I want justice. I'm not comparing Carlson to Hussain. It is not even close. However, when humans do vile behavior for long periods of time, and we all see it, it's recorded, it's all there, there is a reason to be done with it.
Hold Carson accountable. Replay all the shit, the garbage he mocked us for. Disregard the 'New Tucker'. Same as the old boss. We must keep the high road, but our revenge needs to be justice.
To call Tucker Carlson a cowardly weasel gives both cowards and weasels a bad name. He whored out for the money and notoriety on FOX News when he knew deep down who Donald Trump really was and what kind of threat to the country he represented. He was far worse in his pronouncements than even Marco Rubio on the evening of Jan. 6th and thereafter.
He's trying to soften the blows he'll experience when Trump goes down.
Thank you Heather for writing about the judges they are holding the line in areas that this regime is attempting… as for Tucker no way should he ever come close to holding any elected office - not even dog catcher..
I've been saying for years that the Republican Party was committing suicide. Then I decided that when a political party dies it does not cease to be a party, it just ceases to be political—adopting positions that will be defeated at the polls. I now think that both happen at once, that it collapses in every way, that Heather is right about cracks widening and rats regrouping for future rat-infested conflicts. A certain percentage of us (ca. 30?) is always ratty in one way or another—stupidity, ignorance, sheer viciousness (cruelty, racism, sexism, evil of many kinds, etc.)—but that the rest of us just need to hold firm to our principles and VOTE. That's democracy, and it's not pretty, but it's the best we have to survive. Ancient Greeks said it, and it's true.
Ernest Hemingway wrote “How did you go bankrupt? Gradually, then suddenly”. The future of Trumpism, a faction led by a man who has a history of walking away from disasters he has created.
We need to ensure that there is a substantial cost for having been a Trump Sycophant. And for a start it should be paid in trust lost. These people are trying to pretend that their past actions did not impose significant cost on this nation and its citizens. They are fully complicit in Trump’s destruction of our democracy, and no doubt they have profited handsomely along the way. Only now they are seeing that the costs outweigh the benefits and are hoping that America will give them a do-over. Sorry, but some of us are not so gullible.
Tucker Carlson is a colossal hypocrite and a fame whore who should never be anywhere else but where he sits now ..behind a home camera spewing BS. But…his fracture from trump is very helpful in eroding the structure of the base that loves both of them ..so for that..let him keep on spouting for awhile but be very wary.
We have to push harder now than ever to reassure voters that they MUST vote..that their vote COUNTS..that even if their districts were gerrymandered they can STILL vote..that their voices must be HEARD . THEY MUST VOTE THEM ALL OUT.. WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER.
Speak to everyone you can either in person..via email..phone or posts on social media. Share Heather’s daily words and all other independent voices speaking truth to power. Every person you can reach helps…nothing is more important now.
There is light coming from between these cracks..make them grow bigger and wider until they break apart and we end this national nightmare for good.
Don’t be fooled by Carlson..he’s just as self absorbed and ambitious and power hungry as the rest of them but support the sniping and the dissent within the ranks…push them to turn on each other and let them rot from the inside like a cancer that grows and spreads until they’re weakened to the point of extinction.
The very thought of Carlson in government has me sick to my core. I hadn’t ever given this consideration. Now I won’t stop thinking about the possibility.
The courts are holding. Three separate decisions and all supporting the rule of law rather than the authoritarian project of Stephen Miller and Russ Vought. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Trump is literally falling apart before our eyes. It’s becoming more and more obvious that he isn’t even pretending to do the job anymore. None of his toadies are going to invoke or support the 25th amendment. His erraticism is accelerating. I truly don’t know how we are going to get through the rest of his term even though I am increasingly confident the Dems will take both the House and Senate. As for Tucker, he can go fuck off all the way to Mars. What a contemptible and opportunistic piece of garbage. He’s gotten religion about Trump all of a sudden?! What a joke
Tucker is just a rat jumping a sinking ship. If democrats capture the house and senate in the midterms he won’t have much of a platform to spout his vile shit. Fox will not take him back.

With you on that Charlotte, from here in Scotland.
likewise, from here in East Yorkshire.
Unfortunately, we seem to be a nation who would rather watch news entertainment than think.

That makes two of us. She was mostly to blame for what has happened because Keir did not stand up to her

Yep, those two words that many of us have had in mind for a long time, rats and ship.

This is so important!

Heather,
Another outstanding post. I especially appreciate your take on Carlson finding his conscience. It was right where we thought: in his wallet.
Thank you for the work you do!
I didn’t think he *had* any principles.
Two years ago I fully expected Tucker Carlson of secretly harboring Presidential Political aspirations.
What a “Dufus”…just saying.
I did too.
The very thought of Carlson in government has me sick to my core. I hadn’t ever given this consideration. Now I won’t stop thinking about the possibility.
