Trump knows he’s going to lose in November, so he’s rigging the system instead

At an Oval Office event that was supposed to be about a $700 million “clean coal” plan, the President of the United States repeatedly appeared to fall asleep, his face swollen, his eyes heavy, looking increasingly disconnected from the room around him. When he was awake, he mocked a Democratic Senate candidate as “a basket case,” compared another to a Mad Magazine mascot, and said he would be “honored” to meet Iran’s Supreme Leader. But buried in the rambling, between the insults and the drifting, he told us exactly what he is planning for November. Because even at his most incoherent, this president always tells us the truth about what he intends to do.

He spent the entire day declaring elections rigged, posting that America has “the Most Dishonest Elections of any Country, anywhere in the World,” and demanding passage of his SAVE America Act. And then he revealed the last piece of the machine. Explaining his appointment of Bill Pulte as acting Director of National Intelligence, the head of the entire U.S. intelligence community, Trump said Pulte “may find out some things about the rigged elections.” Not protect our elections. Find things. This is the same Bill Pulte who, at his last job, sent the Justice Department criminal referrals against four Democrats who investigated Trump. And as an “acting” director, he needs no Senate confirmation and can stay through the midterms. Senator Mark Warner saw it clearly: “If he’s been able to manipulate and weaponize mortgage information, think about if you got the keys to all of the intelligence agencies.” The false claim. The proposed law. And now the loyalist in the chair. You only build that machine ahead of time if you already know you are going to lose.

But the man building it is weaker than he wants us to believe. His SAVE America Act failed in the Senate today, 48 to 50, without even a simple majority. Four Republicans broke with him again. And the Kennedy Center began removing his name from the building, less than a week after a federal judge ruled it had been added there illegally. The machine is real, and we have to see it clearly. But so is the resistance. And November is coming.
