Yesterday morning, the Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship, ruling that the promise written into the Fourteenth Amendment survives. Chief Justice Roberts traced it from English common law through the abolitionists to today, writing that “the Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to every free-born person in this land. We keep that promise today.” But the victory was held by a single vote. On the actual constitutional question, whether the Constitution itself protects birthright citizenship, it was five to four, with Justice Kavanaugh writing a roadmap telling Congress exactly how to pass legislation restricting it. And Trump’s response revealed how he sees the Constitution. After hours of silence, he posted that the ruling was “too bad for our Country,” but Congress could simply overrule the Supreme Court with ordinary legislation. In his mind, the Constitution is not the highest law of the land. It is an obstacle to get around. There is no law higher than Donald Trump.
That same morning, the Court handed him something he did celebrate. In another 6-3 decision, it struck down federal limits on how much political parties can spend in coordination with their own candidates. Under the old rules, a single donor could give a candidate $7,000 directly. Now they can funnel up to $500,000 through the party, and the party and candidate can sit in the same room and spend it together as if limits do not exist.
And while three landmark rulings dropped, Trump hid from the press all day, reportedly weighing whether to abandon the Iran negotiations and return to all-out war, because resuming the conflict would be an admission that his signature deal failed. Years ago, Trump repeatedly accused Obama of planning to start a war with Iran to win an election, describing the desperation, the failed negotiations, and the willingness to waste lives for political survival. He was writing his own playbook, and he is now in the exact position he described. Meanwhile, his 927-page financial disclosure revealed nearly $1.2 billion in income from crypto ventures alone, including his Trump meme coin that collapsed 98 percent and cost more than a million investors, many of them his own supporters, $2.3 billion.
