At 3:37 yesterday afternoon, Donald Trump sat with his shoulders slumped forward, his hands hidden on his legs beneath the dark wooden desk in the Oval Office. His eyes remained closed as he fought to stay awake while a circle of handpicked far-right religious power brokers and political loyalists stood packed tightly behind him. A stack of bright red "America Is Back" hats rested on the corner of his desk like campaign merchandise waiting to be handed out. For 21 minutes and 14 seconds, they filled the room with one proclamation after another about God, faith, and the future of America.
I don’t see anything resembling Christianity from the christofascists of America. Republicans have all been adhering to the same call for an authoritarian state. Did he actually think about signing the bill for housing or never had any intention of doing so because “the libs and the communists will be affected first so deal out the pain, we can take it.” The Department of Education and the public school system are being reevaluated to ensure a poor learning experience because “he loves the uneducated”.
And their plan is, "We're a free country as long as you believe in, and follow our God"? It would be the end of our country. This is real, and they aren't trying to hide it. Resist while we still can.
Im old, and increasingly impatient. It's odd because the older you get, the faster time flies. Anyway, can we just skip all the nasty shit and get down to the nitty gritty.
A revolution, a coup, stroke maybe. Something to break the momentum if calamity after calamity. I live on the other side of the world, but if his reckless behaviour causes a shooting war that destroys governments, we will all be impacted. His flying monkeys need to be identified, documented, and all held to account. Before this whole shebang turns into a town by town, street by street war.
Ken, I am truly sorry that the insanity we Americans find ourselves in also impacts you on the other side of the world. But at least you are wise enough to know that.
(And you are so correct, the older we get, the faster the time flies by.😵💫😵💫😵💫)
Usually the people who stand at the front of the church are there to be seen. The ones who are out helping the beleaguered and frightened because their lives have been upended are the real Christian’s.
And Christian is a generic word the encompasses all religions. Look at the Sikh people who regularly feed the homeless without fanfare.
Kindness, love and compassion seem to be missing in spades from this administration whose only joy is turning a fast buck at the expense of others, and coming up with ideas on how to cheat the very people they should be caring for, not least it is their tax money being fritted and spent
How can christianity encompass all religions, when there were world religions established well before it, including Hinduism and Judaism? In fact, Christianity and Islam are newer religions, said to be based on those that are eons older.
I’ve got news for those christofaschists. You can make children read the bible in school but they won’t necessarily believe any of it—a collection of re-translations of miscellaneous scrolls dug up from caves, etc., that were in a language no longer spoken, compiled by an English king and slanted to please him. My younger brothers and I went to church school, had the bible and religion stuffed down our throats and—guess what!!—we are all atheists, all in our eighties and nothing any so-called christian can say or do will ever persuade us to believe in any religion.
We lived in a rural area and I think we got good parenting—we were very free, gallivanting all around the countryside, climbing trees, playing with neighbourhood children. Our mother was too busy to keep close track of us—we were very lucky. All still around, in our 80s, which is very surprising considering all the mischief we got up to.
It does. And the religious right has been chipping away at it for the past 50 years. And most Americans say by because "they wouldn't actually go that far would they?"
When someone tells you who they are, believe them.
Here's a helpful piece explaining how even if the constitution doesn't contain the phrase "separation of church and state," there is a long legal history of it being the standard. Worth a read!
And here's another more concise look at religion and the U.S. government:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
They do not care what you believe as long as they can indoctrinate your child. David and Goliath is a fairy tale that predates Christianity. The many versions of the Bible are stitched together bits of oral traditions replete with tales told twice but differently, gaps and inconsistencies. And then you have the translations and mistranslations. The KJV is a translation cobbled together from translations and not the literal word of any “God”.
As a believer in Jesus Christ, I am appalled and dismayed by this so-called Religious Liberty Commission. I see no evidence of the love and humility preached by Jesus in these “Christians” who make up the Commission. And where are the Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, and other religious representatives? Why does the Religious Liberty Commission only represent “Christians” of political conservative nationalist views?? This whining victimhood is a cover for the whining right wing political power seekers, who are the blasphemous political authorities that Jesus warned us against. May the Lord help us to discern false religion and dangerous authoritarian political operatives who seek to take away the liberties guaranteed by our Constitution.
Would like Bishop Barron, who decides to blabber to the press not to be “cowed” by the concept of separation of church and state…
Here’s a thought for all those hypocrites in that bordello of a golden room located at that destroyed White House that the person who actually penned that Constitution in fact he is called “Father of the Constitution", James Madison may wholeheartedly disagree as well as most Americans. Your see James Madison, the "and primary architect of the Bill of Rights, was a staunch advocate for the separation of church and state. He believed that religious liberty was an inalienable natural right and that keeping government out of religious affairs was essential to protecting both civil freedom and the integrity of religion.
Madison's views on church and state are defined by a few core arguments. Madison famously referred to conscience as "the most sacred of all property". He argued that matters of faith must be left to the individual's mind, completely free from any government coercion. Even as a young Virginia legislator, he was horrified by the imprisonment of Baptist preachers who lacked state-issued licenses, driving his lifelong crusade to dismantle established religions. Madison maintained that Christianity and religion as a whole thrived best when “entirely disconnected from government patronage”, which he argued only bred "pride and indolence in the clergy".
Anybody else see the indolence and pride on display for all the press and journalists that were reporting on yesterday from those “religious zealots”?
Oh btw - Isn’t Iran known more for their religious overshadowing for all government decisions and referred to as Islamic radicals? How about ISIS? Seems religion plays a huge factor, don’t you think.
Tell us all the differences of these Christians standing in the Oval from those religious radicals…
Totally agree TJ, and thank you for the history…for those of us not as historically educated as we should be! And a whitewashed education until college.
Ultimately, it is a Nazi, fascist, pseudo-christian movement by their chosen “messiah,” a true false god.
The MAGA/MAWA-Make AmeriKKKa White (“christian” nationalist”) Again KKKult, just more widespread, powerful, political, and financially wealthy with religious freedom from taxation, than Jim Jones, Manson, David Koresh, but the likes of Scientology and Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam, both coincidentally connected despite outright anti-semitism and racism, just like we’re seeing with this administration and six corrupt SCOTUS.
I would NOT be surprised if there was dark monies from some of the far right KKKults with all the same goals of eugenics, sex trafficking, rape, pedophilia, murder-people disappearing, people being extorted, cut off from families and friends, etc., all for their “leaders” in the name of their chosen god.
The Constitution is in the shredder, being replaced by Project 2025 and the Big Ugly Bill.
Hmm, interesting. I thought people already knew this, about how the u.s. uses religion to take over a country, or a people. I thought this was u.s. law already? I’m speaking from personal experience as an indigenous person. When I was growing up in the 1950’s an ‘60’s, it was government policy for churches to basically kidnap Indian children from their families and take them to live with white Christian families in towns and cities very far away from the reservation.
This was done in order to erase the indigenous culture and language from Indian country and turn the kids into zombies without a culture. This was the effect and the outcome on Indian children.
It was u.s. government policy up to 1977.
The philosophy behind it was to “kill the Indian, save the man”.
But what the gov and churches didn’t realize is that the dna of love and harmony is built into our indigenous hearts, body, mind, and spirit. And we survived. Our cultures are still beating with the heartbeat of the earth and sky.
And the hate and disaster the church and state brought to our shores and into our lives did not and will not destroy us. Because what they bring is something they don’t understand. Because god and faith is not just a bunch of words written into the bible.
If you only read words and only understand the and care to understand the use of words, then you really don’t understand your living environment.
From my experience with Christian’s and the gov, that’s their power, words.
Life was here before words were. You have to go beyond words to live a life.
I’m sorry for what has happened to you, your indigenous relatives. I know here in Maine it has been horrific and only recently really been acknowledged. The Native tribes here are still mistreated, victims of ICE, and are given very little for a land that was once theirs.❤️🩹
I have a thought. Americans refer to their indigenous population as "native Americans" whilst Canadians refer to "First Nation" people. A subtle difference.
I have wondered about that myself. “First Nation” has a more respectful tone to it. I think in America, the label “Native American” was a forced error. It grew out of the time when there was still a lot of uproar over politically correct speech in the ‘70’s.
I try to reach out to people but I'm always told I'm being alarmist. People have been calling me alarmist for the past decade and I've been right about most of it. How do we wake these people up?
Well Jenn, I'm a member of of your club. I've been called negative person, crazy, psycho, delusional. Ever since I was 8 years old. I've questioned my then religion constantly and got in trouble for it.
So, you are not an alarmist. You see what is going on you investigate what you see you read the room as they say.
Thank You Thank You Thank You!!! People need to understand the myriad of nuances leading towards what is NOT the America we have pledged allegiance to our whole lives.
Good gracious me, does this mean that children possibly even adults will read about a previously unknown chap who came wandering out of the wilderness and preached such alarming things about loving one’s neighbours, doing good even on the Sabbath, making the lame walk and the blind see and so upset those who were running the state religion that they had him bumped off.
Seems to me that Trump will sink as low as required in order to make it possible to stay in power but using religious freedom and belief to protect himself against his enemies is about as low as it gets. But then he goes even lower and dictates what our children should be taught in school.
Who the Fcuk does he think he is fooling?
Even Cletus (on the Simpsons) can see what he’s up to. It doesn’t require a theological degree!!
When the freedom to choose what you believe is taken from you there is only one thing left to do. This whole despicable corrupt regime is absolutely REVOLTING! They need to be told NOW!
Your move Americans! But move you must and move fast! You simply cannot wait until November!!
July 4th is your moment - you must make it count. . . For the sake of YOUR country - for God’s sake!
“No president in our history has stood more for God than this president."
My take on this ridiculous claim
Donald Trump, the guy who cheated on the mother of his first three children with the mother of his fourth child and cheated on her with the mother of his fifth child and cheated on her with a porn actress who he paid to shut the f**k up about it. REPUBLICAN FAMILY VALUES !
Over 50 years ago, somebody gave me a book called ANSWER, which described all popular religions and believes in the world. What I learned from reading it, was that there is no real fundamental difference between convictions. The book has been mandatory reading for my children and I kept it ever since. Yet throughout history, religion has been the driver of conflicts and wars. The reason is that people have always used their own interpretations of the holy books to justify their behavior and to reach their egocentric goals. There is a good reason for the separation between church and state. It guarantees freedom of religion, safeguards a democracy and protects minorities. There is basically nothing wrong when politicians are influenced by their faith when making decisions. I would like to believe that moral pillars of religion, like love, respect, compassion and taking care of each other can be a good thing to consider when you have to make choices. Of course I know better and in the USA unfortunately you now see politicians abusing religion to implement a hideous agenda. To see this picture of Trump, a man without moral values and almost the anti Christ, sitting in the middle of this group of people makes me nauseous. This is another example how he and his enablers will do anything to hang on to power and yes Heather, you are right, this is probably all driven by fear that the party will be over after the midterms. Having said that, let’s not be naive. Just waiting for the midterms to be the single solution and in the meantime silently accept that Trump and his enablers keep on changing the rules is not going to work. In this tempo they will continue to destroy democracy, so that fair elections will just be a dream and no longer a reality. You have to show now and everyday that you are the majority that does not see the future of your country like they do. There is still hope for America, but everyday you are getting closer to the point of no return. After that it could take decades to get back to a normal state of democracy.
We are closer to the point of no return than people even realize. All of the things they are doing in the background with still limited pushback have very dangerous repercussions.
They are already the Deep State. Vance is being prepped (bought by Palantir’s Thiel), and the technofascists, EPSTEIN Class have infiltrated our government. The EPSTEIN connection and National and Global Web goes deep, far and wide, of continuing decades long coverups of Espionage, sex trafficking, pedophiles, rape, money laundering, arms deals, trump, family, EPSTEIN Class, Israel-Netanyahu, Russia-Putin, “BORED of Peace” members, military, etc. It’s all connected.
ICE Gestapo/J6’ers EXECUTIONERS, kidnappers, CONCENTRATION CAMPS, illegal mass deportations, expanding the “domestic terrorists” list, denying asylum to Haitian and Syrian immigrants, etc., backed by his sycophantic and complicit administration, RepubliKKKans and BeneDickt Fetterman, wealthy elite placed loyalists, and worst of all Six Corrupt SCOTUS.
The thought of the government ordering or supporting a certain religion is horrifying. The founders of the country did not want the country to have a national religion. Many of them were followers of Deism. That time was the Enlightenment.
While I support the separation of church and state, and I don’t feel that any religion should be required curriculum, I am wondering what’s going to happen when a reasonably good teacher (and there must be a few who haven’t fled the state of Texas) actually begins teaching the gospels. Maybe start with the book of John. Any intelligent child is going to start asking questions that are hard to answer. If Jesus taught us to welcome strangers why are our neighbors being arrested and deported? If Jesus taught us to help the poor, why are people losing their SNAP benefits? If Jesus taught us to heal the sick why are people losing their health benefits? I’m truly wondering how this is all supposed to work out. There is absolutely nothing in the current administration’s policies that actually reflects the tenants of Christianity. I would think they would be hiding from the gospels rather than making them required reading, but I do understand Heather‘s point about power and conflating sin and obedience.
I don’t see anything resembling Christianity from the christofascists of America. Republicans have all been adhering to the same call for an authoritarian state. Donald J Trump is the least Christian person I am aware of. What a farce. A very dangerous, scary farce.
Mr. Trump is not a Christian period. He doesn’t attend the church at all.
And their plan is, "We're a free country as long as you believe in, and follow our God"? It would be the end of our country. This is real, and they aren't trying to hide it. Resist while we still can.

(And you are so correct, the older we get, the faster the time flies by.😵💫😵💫😵💫)
Because each minute you live going forward is a smaller percentage of the life you have lived.
EXACTLY
I understand what you mean. Time flies so faster. We will prevail.
Usually the people who stand at the front of the church are there to be seen. The ones who are out helping the beleaguered and frightened because their lives have been upended are the real Christian’s.

Words like Kindness, Compassion and Caring are more encompassing than Christian. Why use a divisive term when we need desperately need unity?????
Yes!
How can christianity encompass all religions, when there were world religions established well before it, including Hinduism and Judaism? In fact, Christianity and Islam are newer religions, said to be based on those that are eons older.

Perfect, thank you! As a fellow atheist, although that was the result of good parenting 😂
Isn't the USA supposed to have a separation of church and state? I personally do not want some narcissistic fool dictating what I should believe
It wouldn't work no matter how hard he tried, but I just want him to keep his orange nose out of my life.
It does. And the religious right has been chipping away at it for the past 50 years. And most Americans say by because "they wouldn't actually go that far would they?"
