Trump is clearly not fit for office and it's getting worse

At a formal White House dinner with the nation’s governors, Trump opened his remarks by confessing out loud that he believes members of his own Cabinet want to overthrow him. It was raw paranoia on display. And it was only the beginning of a speech that wandered through election lies, a bizarre detour about the location of the Great Salt Lake, frustrated complaints that no one will let him take personal credit for the founding of America, and a strange suggestion that the governors vote on whether to allow journalists to stay for the evening’s musical performance. No one seemed to know how to respond. Because there is no normal response to what is happening.

But what may be even more alarming than what he said is the question of how much he actually understands about his own condition. He is handed the same recycled talking points at nearly every public appearance, and he appears not to notice. The people surrounding him have every incentive to keep him in the dark, because the moment the performance ends, so does their grip on power. This is not just a cover-up for the public. It may be a cover-up for him as well.

How does this chapter end? Part of why America keeps cycling back to these dark moments is that it has never done the deep structural work of truly reckoning with its worst chapters. Germany carries its history as a permanent obligation, building it into memorials and education systems so it cannot be forgotten or repeated.
