Trump is about to pay the Jan 6th rioters with your tax dollars
I wish this were a joke, but it's very real
While the news stations were covering Trump’s visit to China, ABC News broke a story that should stop every American in their tracks. The administration is reportedly planning a $1.7 billion settlement fund to pay the nearly 1,600 people charged in connection with the January 6th attack on the Capitol, along with anyone who claims they were harmed by what Trump calls the “weaponization” of the legal system. The money would come from taxpayer dollars, with no congressional vote required. A five-member commission Trump controls would decide who gets paid. He could fire any member without cause. The commission would not be required to disclose its procedures, its decisions, or even the names of the recipients. And the fund could also include “entities associated with President Trump himself.”
This is not just corruption. It is a recruitment tool. It sends a message to every person in this country who has been thinking about whether to break the law for Donald Trump: if you do it for me, I will not just pardon you. I will pay you. Every regime that has ever needed a private army has used the same playbook. Mussolini’s Blackshirts were compensated by the state. Pinochet’s secret police were quietly paid from government funds, with their identities protected. The pattern is always the same. The regime needs foot soldiers. The foot soldiers need to know they will be taken care of. And the public is forced to pay for both. We are less than six months from the midterms, and the president is reportedly building a fund to financially reward the people who already tried to overturn one election for him.
And on the flight home from China, Trump turned to New York Times correspondent David Sanger, who had asked a basic question about whether repeating the bombing campaign in Iran would produce different results, and said, “I actually think it’s treason.” He said it twice. Treason is the only crime written into the Constitution. It is a capital offense. When a president calls a reporter treasonous for asking a question, he is not just insulting that reporter. He is signaling to every prosecutor, federal agent, and armed extremist that this person has been identified as an enemy of the state. And he is setting the stage to criminally prosecute the press. A $1.7 billion fund to pay his foot soldiers. And treason charges floated against journalists who ask questions. These are not the actions of a man who is winning. These are the actions of a man who knows the walls are closing in.

The only way I can deal with this right now is to pretend it’s Monopoly money. Pardoning the Jan 6 th rioters should have been it for the entire country. But here we are thanks to folk like Mitch McConnell, Justice Roberts. We must remain optimistic, it’s exhausting.
