Trump hosts meme coin gala for investors after value drops 96%

The President of the United States hosted a crypto gala at Mar-a-Lago where his family has made over $336 million from a meme coin that has collapsed 96% from its peak. Soon after, he told reporters he won’t send negotiators to Iran peace talks because it’s “too expensive.” He called himself “a very cost-conscious person.” The man who is too cost-conscious for diplomacy just walked out of a party where 297 people paid for access by holding his personal cryptocurrency; the top 29 got a champagne toast with the president, and almost all of them lost most of what they put in. He collects a transaction fee on every buy and every sell. He profited on the way up and on the way down. And the biggest holder in the room, a Chinese-born crypto billionaire, is simultaneously suing the Trump family’s other crypto venture for fraud while raising a glass with the president. Even the people who got burned keep showing up because the access is that valuable.

And then The New York Times published an investigation that connects the same pattern to something far larger. A Syrian billionaire family with $12 billion in reconstruction contracts that were blocked by American sanctions cut Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump into a multibillion-dollar resort project in Albania. They cultivated members of Congress. Someone delivered a stone engraved with the Trump family crest to a congressman with instructions to carry it to the White House. And then Trump signed the repeal of those sanctions into law. The contracts started moving. The resort deals kept expanding. Not a single Republican said a word.

This is what kleptocracy looks like. Not a dramatic seizure of power, but a transaction fee on a collapsing coin, an Albanian resort deal, a defense bill with a sanctions repeal no one noticed. In Putin’s Russia, the oligarchs didn’t bribe the government from the outside. They became the government. Trump’s version is louder, sold with merchandise and a leaderboard and branded fragrances, but it follows the same blueprint. And we are the ones paying for it, in taxes, in a government that no longer works for us, and in the cost of protecting a president traveling to his properties 129 times since taking office. November is coming.
