At 1:35 in the afternoon, the President of the United States walked toward a podium inside the newly renamed Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace to celebrate what was being called the “Golden Age of Science.” He insulted his own rally crowds by announcing that he finally had “an extremely high IQ audience for a change,” claimed America had invented almost everything important, and handed the nation’s highest scientific honors to his wealthy friends. Elon Musk, who spent more than $275 million helping him get elected, became “our modern-day Thomas Edison.” Trump even received an award himself: his late uncle’s medal, presented in a wood frame. Five of the six people being honored were immigrants. That same morning, JD Vance attacked the H-1B program Microsoft uses to sponsor foreign workers for permanent residency. At the same event, Trump honored Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, who came here from India as a student and later worked on an H-1B visa.
At 4:30 PM, the celebration was over and the message had changed. Trump posted that Minnesota was being taken over by Somali immigrants, accused the community of bringing “Violence, Murder, and Mayhem,” and told the people of Minnesota to “fight back.” I keep thinking about the families who left behind everything they knew to find safety here, now hearing the President describe them as a threat and tell their neighbors to fight back. Wealthy immigrants who fund his campaigns and make him look powerful get medals. Other immigrants become scapegoats, weapons against his political enemies, and a way to keep his base terrified and loyal.
I overheard women who appeared to be in their seventies talking about spending their retirement years fighting for their country’s survival. These should be their golden years, time with grandchildren and time to enjoy the world they helped build. Instead, they are standing up again. Their sacrifices are not forgotten. We are 24 days from the midterms, and taking back Congress means taking back the ability to hold this administration accountable. We also have to preserve the truth of what happened. When our votes are counted next month, we will finally stop carrying that weight and begin the work of rebuilding our country and making sure this never happens again.
