At 2:24 in the afternoon, Donald Trump opened a binder in the Oval Office for what was supposed to be an announcement about a new steel plant in Iowa. What followed was 43 minutes that told us far more about the people surrounding him than it did about steel. He said incoherent things like, “We have the best murder. It’s not a nice thing to say.” And around the room, the praise kept coming from a room full of his most loyal sycophants. A room full of powerful people took turns reassuring one man while his own words gave the rest of us every reason to be concerned.
A question about gas prices led him into remarks about nuclear weapons, including, “Let them hit us with a nuclear weapon.” This is an unacceptable way for a president to talk about the safety of the people he serves. He called Canada one of the worst countries to deal with while describing China as good. After attacking Tim Walz, he asked, “We can supersede the state, right?” An aide answered yes. The people in that room did not challenge him, they kept praising him.
Something a friend told me offered a different kind of perspective. They are not following every development the way I am. They already know how they will vote, and they are protecting their mental energy until then. I understand that. Their quiet doesn’t mean they are indifferent, and I wonder how many others feel the same way. One conversation cannot tell us what an election will do. It can remind us that the loudest voices are not the only people who will have a say. In 35 days, we have a chance to choose a different future for our children and for this country. We still have to show up. We still have to vote.
