Just after 1 p.m., with Melania beside him, the President of the United States twirled a green flag to start the “MAGA Freedom 250 Grand Prix,” having transformed the nation’s capital into a racetrack for his own entertainment. He and Melania took a ceremonial lap through Washington in the Beast as the gifted Qatari jet flew overhead with a fighter-jet escort, one of seven military flyovers that paused air traffic at Reagan National for three hours. Then he settled into a bulletproof suite alongside much of his Cabinet, from Todd Blanche to Marco Rubio to Pete Hegseth. Some of the most powerful people in the federal government, with the country at war, a trade crisis unfolding with our closest neighbor, and a midterm election weeks away, all sitting together watching cars go around in circles.
The most revealing moment came from the racetrack that morning, when Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy went on Fox News to dismiss Canada as “a country that doesn’t have a military.” Except Canada has roughly 70,000 active troops, is our NATO ally, and sent its sons and daughters to Afghanistan after 9/11, where 158 of them died in a war they entered because we were attacked. A sitting Cabinet secretary erased their sacrifice on national television because Trump has decided Canada is this week’s enemy. The lie was so lazy that millions could disprove it instantly, which is what makes it so telling. Effective propaganda takes something recognizable and twists it just enough to blur the truth. Duffy didn’t bother. He said it with confidence because he assumed his audience either wouldn’t know or wouldn’t check. The insult wasn’t only aimed at Canada. It was aimed at the intelligence of the very people listening.
None of this is an accident. It is what a government looks like when loyalty matters more than competence, staffed by people who will say whatever the administration needs, true or not. The race itself was an example of what this regime does. When they couldn’t get congressional approval to run it around Capitol Hill, they simply moved the route and used an executive order to go around Congress entirely, the same thing we keep watching, where a boundary is never respected, only bypassed. In 72 days, we get to answer the question of who runs this country, and the answer is us. They can turn the Mall into a racetrack and fly the Qatari jet over the Smithsonian, but they cannot executive-order away our right to walk into a voting booth and tell them their time is up.

We are living through a pivotal moment for our country, and my goal is to reach as many people as possible with clear, factual information about what is happening. The more people who understand what is unfolding, the better our chances of pushing back against chaos, cruelty, and corruption ahead of the midterms.
