Trump betrayed the man who tried to name an Interstate after him
Yesterday morning, the President of the United States shared an image of himself sitting on a rhinoceros holding a rifle beside giant letters reading “NO RINOS!” It was not about hunting. “RINO” is MAGA shorthand for Republicans In Name Only. The President of the United States used violent imagery to target members of his own party, and then spent the rest of the day trying to further solidify his power. Because the night before in Texas, four-term Republican Senator John Cornyn lost his primary to Ken Paxton, the candidate Trump endorsed. Cornyn had spent a year courting Trump, even introducing legislation to name an 1,800-mile highway after him. None of it mattered. Trump held a grudge because Cornyn “was not supportive of me when times were tough.” Paxton was impeached by his own Republican legislature on sixteen counts. National Republicans have been warning he could lose them a Senate seat they’ve held for thirty years. Trump handed him the nomination anyway, because punishing disloyalty mattered more to him than keeping the Senate.
The pattern never bends. A week ago, Trump’s hand-picked challenger defeated Thomas Massie in the most expensive House primary in American history, $32 million spent to destroy a man whose crime was pushing to release the Epstein files. There is no level of devotion that buys safety. Loyalty is not something Trump feels or returns. It is only something he demands. And the moment you stop being useful, you become the next target.
But today in South Carolina, Republicans crossed the line and joined Democrats to kill Trump’s redistricting push to erase the state’s only majority-Black congressional district, on the very first day of early voting, as more than 32,000 people cast ballots in record turnout. A White House adviser called it “a betrayal.” But it was not betrayal. It was conscience. The very Republicans Trump threatened with a meme are the ones who just proved he can be stopped. And in Texas, the man Trump chose over Cornyn now faces Democrat James Talarico in November in what could become one of the most competitive Senate races in the country. Trump keeps creating his own opposition. And every time he does, he makes November a little more possible.

We are living through a pivotal moment for our country, and my goal is to reach as many people as possible with clear, factual information about what is happening. The more people who understand what is unfolding, the better our chances of pushing back against chaos, cruelty, and corruption ahead of the midterms.

You are SO my favorite journalist! I just love the way you think. The way that you put those thoughts in order and come up with brilliant journalism. Even in times like these, in which, as you know, there isn’t a lot of positive in the political scene…..your reporting always leaves me hopeful. Which I hadn’t felt in a long time. Thank you. 🙏🏼
Thank you Heather for a succinct breakdown of today’s events.
What I don’t understand is why Trump’s bootlickers including those in his liquor cabinet don’t start lawyering up There will be accountability especially in we take the senate. Does his cult have a suicide pack as all cults do? Are they that cravenly greedy that they can’t abandon their crime spree of pillaging and plundering, destroying and desecrating everything good in America?
