This is a NATIONAL EMERGENCY and it’s getting worse

I live in San Diego, and from the outside, it looked like another beautiful day. The sun was out, people were walking their dogs, and kids were at school and afternoon sporting events. But underneath that normalcy was a nervous tension that followed us everywhere. Parents were hugging their children a little tighter. Friends and neighbors were having conversations that would have sounded unthinkable not long ago, wondering whether we were actually safe after our own president suggested that an adversary could “take out” our city and called the loss of American cities a “small price to pay.” I remember when we could at least tell ourselves there were experienced people in the government and throughout the chain of command who would stop his worst impulses from becoming the worst outcomes. We no longer have that same reassurance. We are left waking up every morning wondering what one man might decide to do next, and whether anyone with the power to stop him is willing to say no.

I keep thinking about the promise this country was built on: a government that answers to its people, not a king. The men who began that work were imperfect, and so was the country they created. The promise was never that we had already become perfect. It was that we would keep striving toward “a more perfect Union,” and that every generation would carry that responsibility forward. Now we are being asked to accept cruelty and call it greatness. A president insults journalists, celebrates taking another country’s oil, and tells the world, “To the victor belong the spoils.” Families are separated, our neighbors are detained in conditions unfit for any living thing, and people choose between groceries and gas while being told they have never been richer. We were supposed to be the country that helped stabilize the world, respected its alliances, and arrived after disasters with supplies and rescue personnel. That is the America we want our children to inherit, and the one we are fighting to save.

In 28 days, Americans will vote in the midterm elections. For this election, there is no new president waiting on the other side of that date. There is a chance to change the balance of power. Republicans control both chambers of Congress, and the people who should be operating the guardrails are enabling and benefiting from the man trampling them. If Democrats win the House and even the Senate, it will not fix everything or make Trump disappear. It will restore the ability to compel testimony, issue subpoenas, and launch investigations. It will bring back checks and balances. We do not have to accept a government that rounds up our neighbors, wages an unauthorized war, and leaves us living in constant fear and uncertainty. We have 28 days to make sure the people around us understand what is at stake. Our children and grandchildren are watching. The world is watching. We have a country to protect, and we are not going to back down.

We are living through a pivotal moment for our country, and my goal is to reach as many people as possible with clear, factual information about what is happening. The more people who understand what is unfolding, the better our chances of pushing back against chaos, cruelty, and corruption ahead of the midterms.

I’m fighting to save our country (before it’s too late).

I’ll see you tomorrow,

Heather
