What the Orange Bozo hasn't figured out, or more likely doesn't care, is that the Tariffs aren't paid by the country they are applied against. They get paid by us here in the US. As a small business owner, I've had whole markets closed to me because parts that are only made in one place in the world, no longer want to deal with our administration's BS. This isn't hurting them. Just us.

gpm414's avatar

Mark, you are absolutely right that his Tariffs are hurting every American, especially small family businesses. Two of our children are small business owners who are working everyday to provide for their families. I think about the wellbeing of my children, grandchildren and soon our first great grandchild, and realize that our family is an example of so many hard working American families.

Being the son of an immigrant who came to America in 1914 at the age of 14, I have lived and prospered in the American dream for nearly 80 years. And to see it diminished and destroyed by this greed and corruption is sickening. We can't let this be the end of our Democracy. It's not too late to come together and stop this madness. We The People can stop this madness and take our country back.

Heather,

What needs to be added to your excellent analysis of the situation is that not only Trump but his enablers are the reason why the country and all of us are going downhill. His enablers being the Republicans. It is especially important to pin this down when Trump is not in the ballot this mid-term and the Republicans are. The underlying assumption is that all people who finally reckoned that Trump is a disaster, will not vote for their Republican candidate. That is less than obvious. While many people see the link, the ones we hope will abandon Trump may not.

Heather,

I have followed your site for a long time. I am a Brit and proud of it! I was born in 1939 and I was brought up being grateful for the US being our ally, with Russia and others, during WW II. In my childhood and teenage years the US was the source of many of our cultural imports - music, cinema etc. My education gave me an interest in US history as well.

I was amazed and then horrified that the country that elected Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, FDR, Truman (my favourite), Eisenhower & JFK, could elect the current incumbent.

Mindful that we have our own problems; (but none as egregious as those facing the US), I fear for the future of the US as a democracy. There is little that I can do on this side of the pond but when the state of play in the US comes up in conversation I do fly the flag for the ant- Trump position.

The one thing that really got my goat was Trump’s lambasting of the UK and other NATO allies for not joining his forever war against Iran. Has he read Article Five of the North Atlantic Treaty? Probably not!

Bill Corbett's avatar

No he hasn't, because he can't read just picture books is all he understands.

Ian Patrick's avatar

For those interested I post below Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty. It has only been triggered once as a result of the September 11th attacks on the US.

“The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.”

Sorry Heather, on this one I have to disagree. There is no guarantee the United States survives Trump in any recognizable form to the democratic republic we enjoy today. In fact things will likely get much worse. The economy may well collapse. In a way this may be necessary to bring MAGA into the streets alongside progressives. Otherwise instead of revolution against Trump we will have civil war, MAGA against progressives.

The midterms may end in such chaos no winners can be determined. Trump must corrupt the midterms to keep Republicans in control of the House and Senate to complete his authoritarian takeover and protect himself and his cronies. He has no moral limits and will do anything, legal or illegal, to achieve his goals. Expect the unexpected. Imagine the unimaginable.

There are two vectors Trump can use to corrupt the midterms. The first is voter suppression. This has received a lot of attention. It includes things like gerrymandering, purging voter rolls, banning mail-in ballots, reducing the number of early voting days, reducing polling places to make wait lines intolerably long etc. Many prominent election attorneys and public interest groups are fighting these in court and they receive a lot of press coverage.

But there is a second, more insidious method Trump may employ to corrupt the midterms. That is to manipulate the vote count. We use election software to scan ballots and tabulate votes. It can be written to flip votes in close votes in select races to favor the desired candidate. Few people other than those who write the code and computer security experts either understand or can detect its use. The only way to combat it is to either turn out in such overwhelming numbers to vote Democratic or to challenge improbable Republican wins by demanding recounts.

Election Truth Alliance and Smart Elections have been trying to expose the possibility that corrupt election software has been in play, but have received no attention from mainstream media and little attention elsewhere. Nor have any election authorities cooperated by investigating their election software or security protocols. Here us a compendium of election vulnerabilities Election Truth Alliance has compiled;

I am not tech savvy, but I do know your points are valid. And probably likely. THAT is exactly why we must get the 25th amendment active and moving forward NOW. There is no advantage to waiting, the destruction of this country will only continue.

Well said. These are the most volatile and dangerous of times. He/they will try ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to remain in power, no matter who is at the helm.

trump and his Nazi, fascist regime have ZERO intentions of leaving OUR White House.

WE the PEOPLE must prepare for ANY and ALL possibilities as you said.

WOW! What a hair-raising article! Thanks. Lance pretty much writes every last thing I fear except for Trump's operatives corrupting the election software that scans and counts our ballots to subtly tweak the vote in closely contested elections to favor the Republican candidate. Unlike previous elections, Democrats must challenge improbable Republican wins this election by demanding hand recounts. If Trump seizes the ballots breaking the chain of custody for those races then all is lost

Thank you. Yes, he writes some real eye opening pieces. He is a lifelong Civil Rights activist along with his wife. His articles are always a great mixture of understanding the past and how it relates and helps predict the future…if it is allowed to happen…which we are seeing.

The Dems. Are old, paid and useless except the new class.

The fact that ICE Gestapo and Executions with No accountability has continued and the inhumane Concentration Camps pedophilia, rape, sex trafficking, illegal mass deportations to countries they are not even from, , and disappearing people…babies, children, families separated, etc.

Vile and Unconscionable.

I get where you are coming from. Maybe the contents of the MAGA letter are not truly accurate in some of the finer details...BUT the initial question remains: Is your life forecasted to be better given the trajectories we are seeing? Do you even care about the future of your children? It seems not as you are convinced that we are headed for a civil war. War benefits nobody (except the war materials industries). Yet you don't want to try to do anything to avoid that path. Just wait for when missles from your own country start dropping in your area because Trump thinks there are communists in your zone. Think about that.

Shelly Rellim M.'s avatar

I don’t think that is the point of the writing. The point is that trump and his Nazi, fascist Regime are preparing for the loss of elections and to rig, steal, and Definitely are not going to yield to turning over power to the Democrats.

We do NEED to prepare for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING and be PROACTIVE and NOT reactive as the Dems always seem to do.

Thank you Heather for this post & especially the “Dear MAGA” questions. My head hurts so much from trying to put questions together myself. You put them in writing so eloquently for me and others to forward on and share. I shared this post with a close family member that I haven’t spoken to in two years. My deepest gratitude to you for all your work. 💙

How can he be besties with the leaders of actual Communist countries and hate Americans because they are “Communists”? How can MAGA not see the hypocrisy?

They don't see it because they don't know what it means.

Thank you Heather

The letter composed for the “Dear MAGA” friends and or family members may give some an opportunity to have those discussions. Have had many yet find that even when facts are presented the old fallback is this is “fake news”. Have used the many outlined in your letter but to no avail to change a persons mind.

Rob Reiner directed many movies but by far have always loved watching “The American President”. Aaron Sorkin was the writer of this film. Have watched it too many times to count. One of the best lines in that movie IMO is this when the character Andrew Sheppard is talking to Lewis about the American public when they look at leadership in their president.

“They want leadership. They’re so thirsty for it they’ll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there’s no water, they’ll drink the sand. People don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference."

In the film this line depicts the American public not as a bunch of unthinking idiots, the line in the film paints them in a sympathetic light. They’re not stupid — they’re just desperate for something they’ve lacked for so long that they’ll latch onto anything that resembles it.

When the MAGA crowd sit day after day inside an information bubble primarily driven by Fox find that they latch onto the propaganda that is regurgitated continually. Then there of course is the far reaching right-wing of the information bubble of QAnon, podcasters that range from the Tate Bros., Nick Fuentes to that Steve Bannon WarRoom. Find their cognitive thinking diminishes. Not saying there are not those “idiots” out there in this MAGA cult sphere. But have first hand seen some males in my own family and friends that have latched their sleds to this crap. They will literally drink the sand because the “mirage” of Trump is always forefront.. They will negate that their money is tighter, their life is harder, costs across the board are rising due to Trump’s policies, tariffs, etc..and use that lame excuse that it’s “because of Biden..” Is it frustrating, Hell yes.. but also find that from those often selective discussions that they will only want to see or hear what they want to see or hear. That being correct in their minds is by being aligned and loyal with Trump is all that matters. So they will continue to drink the sand in place of any water offered.

There’s an old saying “You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink." You can give someone a chance, good advice, or offer them help, or even give them a good opportunity but you cannot force them to take it. They must choose the thought processes, the work or accept the reality for themselves.

Maybe more will decide to drink the water versus the sand. Have seen some decide to do so, yet a very slow process.

Your mention of the MAGA info bubble also reminds me of an old Paul Simon lyric that seems more and more true the longer I live: "a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest."

Shelly Rellim M.'s avatar

TJ, thank you and Heather for this attempt.

Many will continue to drink the KKKoolAid because a KKKult is a cult is a cult. It often takes a long time of cumulative information to realize, if they ever do, that of what is truly going on…Jim Jones-Jonestown, Charles Manson, David Koresh and the Branch Davidians, Scientology, etc. MAGA/MAWA KKKult.

The other piece, as a Psychology Major, along with extensive reading on cults, is exactly what you said about people only taking in what affirms their beliefs and disregards that which opposes it.

This is a great piece summarized research in The New Yorker…https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/02/27/why-facts-dont-change-our-minds

In the meantime, how can we stay together as the same country with so disparate realities?

TJ's avatar

Not an expert but read as much as possible on this. don't know if this from Brookings may give some answers but do think even the core fundamentals as to what this country can be are inside even the ones so brainwashed inside the propaganda..

Deva West's avatar

"the challenge is not only to manage political disagreement but preserve the civic cohesion that allows disagreement to remain a contest among fellow citizens rather than a struggle among rival nations. "

Thank you for the thoughtful article. It gives me a better perspective. That line from the last paragraph particularly struck me. May it be so in light of increasing recent efforts to demonize, threaten and criminalize those who speak out against the current administrations views and policies.

I watched him bomb last night at the WH Correspondents Dinner. He was pathetic..awful..not one bit funny..ugly..tired..mean and hateful ..an old man. He stood in a room full of journalists and fell flat. The room looked like the Night of the Living Dead…hardly a smile..only a smattering of laughter occasionally. If he had been on a Borscht Belt stage he would have gotten the hook 15 minutes into his over 1 hour diatribe of old and overused reruns.

He KNEW it too..heads probably flew when he got back to the Oval…he was embarrassed and it showed.

The press has now seen his soft white fetid underbelly and not one person in that room could say with a straight face that he’s tough or powerful or worthy of his position…he’s not..he’s floundering and he’s flailing and it was more than obvious last night.

They’re going to be busy today trying to figure out what to do next..how to rig this election to save themselves and they will try everything.

We must get out in the biggest numbers possible to make this turnout too big to rig…so many of our votes that nothing they can do will change the outcome..it’s IMPERATIVE..it’s the only way we beat them.

Those journalists sitting in that room last night saw the naked emperor with their own eyes..they saw the rambling..the ranting the incoherent incompetence of a failing clown..a phony washed up joke..a pathetic loser..nothing to fear from him..start reporting that.

I don’t believe in any of the religions. But I glean from their teachings (and other literatures) and observations basic tenets of living in the human world.

“Be kind.” “Treat your neighbor as you would yourself, honestly and lovingly.” “Plant a seed in fertile ground and it will grow.” “Live right, stand up straight and true, be an example; remember the children are watching.”

And of course have learned it’s all easier said than done. Sometimes the seeds spread weeds, or the ground infertile.

Your words have been rich with love, compassion and intelligence; may they find the fertile soil of many hearts and grow and feed many souls. In the end, we all share this one Earth.

The problem with asking MAGAts if they're better off is, some of them ARE better off, at least financially. I see comments on the Book of Face all the time with these people bragging about how well their investments are doing. What you should be asking them is, Why don't they give a damn about anyone except themselves? How is their financial betterment helping their community?
