They came with rifles and tear gas for farm workers and children.
We all know this has nothing to do with immigration.
Let’s talk about ICE. Let’s talk about control. And let’s talk about what just happened in California.
If you woke up today feeling uneasy, you’re not alone.
On July 10, federal agents armed with rifles, backed by armored vehicles and helicopter surveillance, descended on farms in Camarillo and Carpinteria. They launched flashbangs. They shot tear gas into crowds of civilians. They wore tactical gear and helmets. Some wore gas masks. Many refused to identify themselves. And they dragged dozens of people away.
Among those arrested? Ten undocumented youths, including eight unaccompanied minors. One of them was working in the fields. Others were alone. All were met with guns and force from their own government.
These were children. Many skip right over this as soon as they hear the word “undocumented.” They dehumanize them, sometimes to make themselves feel better about not caring, but mostly because they’ve been brainwashed into believing that not all children matter. Not the poor. Not the brown and Black ones. And certainly not the undocumented ones.
They stop seeing the world’s children the way they see their own. These youths are considered expendable. Discardable.
And you’ll see it in the comments. The so-called “pro-lifers” will scream “save the children,” but not those children. Not the ones missing paperwork.
And what was their crime? Being poor. Being brown. Being visible.
This wasn’t about immigration. It never is.
This was about power. It was about fear. It was about Trump.
Why California? Why now?
Let’s stop pretending this is about border security. This was a message.
California is everything Trump hates. We’re diverse. We vote blue. We protect immigrants. We pass environmental laws. We tax billionaires. We regulate corporations. We challenge his power. And perhaps most unforgivably of all, we win without him. We’re the fourth-largest economy in the world, and we’re thriving. He hates that.
So what does he do? He targets us.
These raids weren’t just coordinated. They were symbolic.
Glass House Farms isn’t a cartel front. It’s a legal, tax-paying, licensed business operating under California law. That doesn’t matter to Trump. He wants headlines, not justice. He wants the optics of a crackdown, not the substance of a policy. Or else he’d be pushing for actual immigration reform. He’s not.
He wants to show his base that he’s “cleaning up” California. That he’s cracking down on sanctuary states. That he’s reestablishing “order” in a state that dares to resist him.
But here’s the thing. Trump doesn’t care about the law. He cares about control. And control always needs a villain. He needs one type of person he can point to and tell his cult followers:
That is the bad guy.
You are in danger because of them.
They will destroy our country.
They are stealing our jobs.
They are stealing your hard-earned money.
They must be erased from existence.
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
Because this is nothing new. This is just another chapter in the dictator playbook.
This isn’t about immigration. It’s about erasure.
ICE isn’t just targeting undocumented immigrants. They’re targeting entire communities. They’re targeting fear.
They want workers who are too afraid to speak up. Too afraid to report abuse. Too afraid to exist.
They want neighbors to turn against neighbors. They want you to look at someone and ask, “Are they legal?” instead of asking, “Are they safe?”
Trump knows he is more powerful when people are afraid. He knows he has more control when there is chaos. And he knows his base is happiest when cruelty is being inflicted on someone else.
And in that chaos, they seize more power.
That’s why Trump’s GOP applauds raids like this. Because it keeps their lie alive, the lie that immigrants are dangerous, criminal, a threat to our safety.
But here’s the truth. According to ICE’s own data, 93 percent of the people they detain have never been convicted of a violent crime. Many of them are fathers. Mothers. Teenagers. Working in our farms. Teaching our children. Cooking our food. Building the homes we desperately need.
They are not destroying America. They are sustaining it.
They are not threats.
They are the backbone of America.
If ICE were doing the right thing, they wouldn’t be hiding.
Let’s talk about those agents.
If ICE were protecting the American people
If they were defending democracy
If they were doing the work of people on the right side of history
Why would they be wearing gas masks and helmets while refusing to identify themselves?
Why arrive in unmarked vehicles?
Why shoot tear gas at protesters, including children?
Why wear no visible name tags?
When you are proud of your work, you don’t operate in the shadows.
You sign your name to it.
You show your face.
You stand tall.
Heroes don’t hide.
When a government sends masked men in tactical gear into peaceful farms to arrest brown workers and scatter families, what would you call that?
Because I call it authoritarianism.
And the cruelty is the point.
A personal vendetta against California
Trump has made it clear. He despises California.
He’s insulted Governor Gavin Newsom repeatedly. He’s threatened to “take over” state institutions. His advisor, Stephen Miller, has long dreamed of punishing California for its sanctuary laws.
And now, Trump is using federal agents as a political weapon.
This isn’t about the law. This is revenge.
In his first term, raids focused on the Midwest and Deep South. Now, the focus has shifted west for a reason. California dared to resist.
Now we’re being made into a warning.
The echoes of history
This playbook isn’t new.
In the 1930s, Hitler didn’t start with genocide. He started by criminalizing communities. He created a common enemy. He used language like “infestation.” He normalized raids. He spread propaganda.
That’s how fascism always begins.
Today, ICE agents are raiding known hubs for Latino workers. Asking people, “What are you doing in the United States? This isn’t your country.” Conducting indiscriminate sweeps. Using military tactics on farm workers and children.
And just like the Nazis used false narratives to justify violence, this administration uses the phrase “illegal criminals” to dehumanize people who, in most cases, are simply lacking paperwork.
And the masks? They matter.
When law enforcement hides their identities, it’s because they know they will not stand up to scrutiny.
The New York City Bar Association warned that masked federal agents represent a direct threat to transparency, accountability, and civil liberties.
They were right.
The economic collapse is the feature, not a flaw.
What happens when you tear hundreds of workers from the fields?
Crops rot
Workers flee
Businesses panic
In the hours and days after the raid, up to 70 percent of farm laborers in the area reportedly stopped showing up. Restaurants closed. Street vendors vanished. Food festivals canceled.
And here’s the kicker.
Studies show these raids don’t benefit American workers. They lower wages. They depress local economies. They destabilize food supply chains.
If this were about protecting jobs, we’d see the opposite.
But this isn’t about jobs.
It’s about creating chaos to justify more government power.
Authoritarians always seek instability. And when they can’t find it, they manufacture it.
Governor Newsom responded. Now, California must act.
Governor Newsom called this exactly what it is. Abuse of power. Federal overreach. Theater rooted in fear. He pointed out that ICE agents tear-gassed children and then lied about it.
He’s right.
But words aren’t enough.
We need action:
• California must pass laws banning federal raids without judicial oversight
• Agents must be required to wear visible ID during public enforcement
• We must end all state cooperation with ICE
• We must fund legal aid for immigrant families
• And we must educate voters so they understand this isn’t just happening here
This isn’t just California’s fight.
It’s America’s fight.
This is how democracies end.
Trump reactivated the 287(g) program, turning local cops into federal enforcers. He used federal authority to overrule California’s National Guard. He’s promised mass deportation sweeps. He’s threatened to end birthright citizenship.
This is a slow-motion constitutional crisis. And it will only accelerate.
Democracies don’t collapse overnight.
They die by a thousand legal cuts.
A thousand raids.
A thousand silences.
This is collective punishment.
What’s happening isn’t just cruel. It’s illegal under international law.
Workers, many of them legal residents, are being detained based on appearance alone. They’re being whisked to other states. Denied contact with attorneys. Pressured to sign deportation papers.
They’re being fed cold sandwiches and potato chips for days. There are even reports of insects in the food, making it unfit for human consumption.
They are isolated.
They are afraid.
And yet, many still show up to work because they have to. Because their families depend on them.
This is trauma by design.
When foreign governments do this, we call it a human rights violation.
We should call it that here, too.
The masks tell the truth.
If ICE were heroes, they wouldn’t hide.
If they were protecting the American people, if they were truly defending democracy, they would wear their badges with pride.
They’d be proud of their work.
They’d stand in the light.
They don’t because they know exactly what they’re doing.
And so do we.
What do we do now?
We fight back.
We show up to city councils and state legislatures
We fund immigrant-led legal defense
We support affected families
We call our representatives
We organize
We vote
And we never stop telling the truth, especially when it’s uncomfortable
Final thought
Let this be the moment we stop pretending.
ICE is not broken. It is functioning exactly as designed for those who want to define a “real” America based on race, loyalty, and obedience.
We cannot let that vision win.
Not in California
Not anywhere
Stand up
Speak out
Vote like lives depend on it, because they do
California is holding the line.
Other states need to get ready because it’s coming for them, too.
