They blessed a gold trump statue. I'm not making this up.
This is not normal...
In the span of two days, two gold statues of Donald Trump were unveiled and blessed by an evangelical pastor. A 22-foot gold-leafed colossus at Trump National Doral, draped in fabric like a Roman toga. And a second at Mar-a-Lago, where Trump called in by phone so the crowd could hear his voice during the blessing of his own monument. It was funded by crypto investors promoting a memecoin that had already cratered. The sculptor said pitching the gold leaf to Trump’s team was “like pitching ice water to a man dying of thirst.”
But it’s not just the statues. Trump drove his motorcade through the drained Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the site where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the “I Have a Dream” speech, and announced he had personally selected its new color. His face is on limited-edition passports, on national park passes, and on a commemorative coin stamped with “FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT.” His signature is being placed on circulating U.S. currency for the first time in history. Three-story banners of his face hang from the Department of Justice. The Kennedy Center has been renamed to include his name. A 250-foot triumphal arch is planned for the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery. And his family has trademarked the name of the Palm Beach airport, which is being renamed after him, so they can profit from branded merchandise. George Washington specifically refused to put his face on the first American coins because he said that was what monarchies did. 250 years later, Trump is doing exactly what the founders most explicitly forbade.
And while Trump replaces the country with himself, Republicans are replacing the voters’ will with their own. The Virginia Supreme Court struck down the redistricting referendum that voters approved just weeks ago, throwing out the results not because of fraud, but over a procedural technicality. Four potential House pickups, gone in one ruling. Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, and Louisiana are already moving to redraw their maps after the U.S. Supreme Court gutted protections against racial gerrymandering. Republicans could gain as many as 14 seats from redrawn maps across multiple states. They are using every court, tool, and procedural lever to lock in power before voters can take it back. And we have to stop pretending that polite statements and trusting the process will be enough to stop them.
