As a non-American observer, I have always been surprised at the idiocy of 70 million Americans voting a convicted criminal, liar , failed businessman and obvious narcissist astheir president. It does not bode well for a nation to look this stupid. However, to my overwhelming surprise, we can now add cowardice to one of your countrymen less desirable qualities as well. Particularly your politicians who seem to be silent whilst their president is committing war crimes and continues to threatening even more. Thankfully, there are some smart people left in the US, those who demonstrate in No King's and those who are not to afraid to report the truth. Those I salute and can only hope that the rest of the population will see the light, I.e. for what this administration, Congress, senate, etc. truly are (allowing war crimes to happen makes you complicit) and American soldiers to remember they can ignore illegal commands. I keep hoping for you.

I can’t believe it either! My NYer-native husband told me in the late ‘60s that “this Donald Trump guy is a real jerk (he used a stronger term), and a shady real-estate [self-named] tycoon.” My husband died before even tRump’s 1st term, and I cannot possibly predict his reaction to knowing that That Guy got elected twice. In the United States of America. It’s shocking and depressing. Thanks for your post, and I agree with just-about all of it!

I'm so sorry. I work on an international team, and every day brings fresh humiliation. I apologize to them every day and tell them most people over here hate him. We are calling, writing, protesting, boycotting.

What actions would you think we should take since you are so judgemental about the numbers at the no Kings rallies? Do you want us to break into buildings or what? We're planning a May 1 boycott. It's easy to sit in another country and cast doubt. What's going on with the two inside your country divided pieces with separate languages and parts that depend on workers from France. ?

You may not know this but it is NOT MY WAR! Why aren't people in the streets in EUROPE too? I am no apologist for TRUMP or any of his dastardly followers! But what has Belgium done about Israel or Hamas or Palestine or even IRAN in the past? I am a senior citizen who DID march about the Vietnam war and other causes; the FRENCH asked us to come save them in VIETNAM! But as truth would have it we cannot UNDO History. Can you undo your history in the CONGO? Some of us do read and remember history too! We are BURDENED with people who support this man for his racism and so much more. Who never got over the SOUTH losing on slavery and yet are too stupid to see how they are being manipulated. Tell me what you are doing to make Belgium better and less racist and then I might listen to you!

Heather, you are such a wonderful writer! I officially joined Substack just to read and share your articles with my husband! They are so well written and I agree completely with your articles about our President. Keep up the great work! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Thanks Heather for your bravery- you show up every day and navigate through the awful swamp that our administration has become. You listen to the uninformed, vile, and mostly incoherent rambling of a broken egomaniacal reality-show host cosplaying as our president.

And you take it all in and distill it for us into a clear and accurate description of the very terrifying reality we’re facing.

Thank you for your tireless dedication to the truth.

If only congress had half of your clarity and even a tenth of your courage, maybe there would be a positive change—or any action at all.

Today I contacted my congress critters and urged them to support invocation of the 25th amendment. It will do little good, because they are all trained seals performing for ringmaster

trump. But it was something I consider to be my civic duty.

Ann Panda's avatar

I contacted my useless maggot congress critter about this too. But he's sashaying around Scotland and his office says he's not bothered by the critism of him being over there while our country is in flames. WI 03.

Bill Corbett's avatar

I did the same last evening, and after reading Joyce Vance this morning, I realized I need to write again today.

Patricia's avatar

Thank you for trying. We cannot give up.

Elizabeth Newberry's avatar

I did the same. I contacted my Senator. And I sent a message to the White House, pleading with the president NOT to attack Iran! I did not mention that I am a died in the wool Democrat. My Senators are democrats, so I know they are on my side!'

What has happened to the GOP? They are absolutely worse than useless!

We are all living in fear and unhappy trauma of what this man will do next. We should all take up a class action that he is effecting our mental health with his chaotic mentally unhinged behaviour helped along by his co conspirator Netanyahu who must be being weaponed up by Trump.

Both of them are not taking into account the humans they are killing and the lives they have decimated.

Scorched earth in Palestine, Lebanon and Iran.

It has to stop - please get Trump some medical help and stand him down.

George McCully's avatar

Please forgive me for sounding avuncular, but I'm an old guy nervously in frustration watching it all from the sidelines. Trump's mental chaos and physical deterioration are now well established and the public is understanding them. What we need next from journalists, and Heather you have already begun to lead this so well, is developing urgent support for the 25th both within and outside the government. This whole situation needs to become an overwhelming democratic process, a movement to which we all can contribute. Sorry to say it like this, but that's the truth as seen from here.

Carol Fletez's avatar

The true power of the 25th amendment asserts that the CABINET would be responsible enough to recognize the flaws and illness in the President and act accordingly; only when THEY have acted or a concerted GROUP from the CONGRESS approach the president, a la the ones who did so to NIXON does that amendment have any TEETH!. It trusted that the people we elect would be responsible citizens and note when the president is not right. Yesterday I BEGGED my senators from Maryland to gather others and go to the WHITE HOUSE and demand he get immediate treatment at WAlter REED for his own health's sake; based on concern that these stresses are too much for him and that he owes a duty to the people for whom he is responsible to get help for his health! At least in a fair evaluation there he might be saved from so drastic a mistake! There is more and more evidence that others are pulling the real strings in this case. It would be a way to flush out exactly who those people are. It would be an act of concern for all of us with the powers that this person and those around him wield. Instead of calling your members of CONGRESS to yell at them, BEG them to see the health issues he has and in fairness to every human life he would kill, start with getting him HELP for his deteriorating mind. He truly is not well.

Bombing civilian assets is a very nasty war crime. Illegal of course. What will do the infamous international community? Bibi and von trump are of course p....g on all international laws and UN resolutions and so far nobody dares to stop them. Ban their products. Customers have some real coercible power. Wake up We the people please

Thank you for a wonderful piece today.

Watched him at the Easter Egg roll balcony presentation and as long as my brain could endure. It was approximately 20 to 30 seconds into whatever that absurdity of what he was saying that couldn’t help myself from laughing out-loud. Like one of those realization laughs of despair, fright and with amusement cackle that you’re witnessing a scene with a woman standing next to him that looks so disinterested in even being there and a person dressed up in costume as an Easter Bunny and that head turns slowly towards him as he speaks about war in Iran at a children’s Easter egg roll with absolute disbelief in those dark blank eyes of that Easter Bunny as the person tilts the head of that costume that this is all our reality. It’s not satire, a dystopian movie it’s that moment when the realization that this is and has been our reality for 441 days… then off to that press conference that had the creepy feeling when Hegseth talked he was describing the resurrection of Jesus was happening in real time and life with the colonel who was rescued. The moment of a fleeting thought is his boss the second coming as per these white Christian nationalist wackos or is the colonel who evaded capture in Iran?

What find beyond that sickened feeling of nausea is not just this Felon’s entire being, thought process, absolute cruelty and evil beyond words and overall foulness and definite mental decline is all those in Congress who cheer this on and even remain absolutely silent.. like they can get away by saying they didn’t see anything, or know anything… So as always contacted my three MAGA useless pieces of flesh and of course it went to voicemail and who knows when an email will be read.

Now this isn’t my rep but Yes there are Rethuglican lawmakers cheering Trump's threat to commit war crimes at 8 PM today. Let’s just take one sorry sack of humanity, Randy Fine (R-Fl) after Trump posts —

“Tuesday, 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time!” — Good ole Randy Fine posts — “Bombs Away!” Yesterday Randy Fine posts — “Happy Power Plant and Bridge Eve!”

We have a number of really sick tickets in our legislative branch of government, it’s not just the executive branch.. Contact your Senators and House Rep because at this point we are the ones holding this surreal dystopian regime to the fire and someday reality may catch up to them at a Nuremberg 2.0..

My ‘97 red Toyota Camry bears two signs: “End Ice” and “Who Would Jesus Bomb?” I’ve received thanks and thumbs up and nothing else. It apparently gives folks hope and a little bit of courage to see 84-year-old me and it driving around Asheville. Heather, you’re inspiring so many of us to do our part.

Heather from where I sit in Canada I see many leaders telling the world this is an illegal war and that they won’t get involved. I’m not sure what messages are being delivered through diplomatic channels but he is so protected that it’s probably the case they don’t give him bad news for fear of his reaction. Miles Taylor wrote yesterday about why the 25 th won’t be invoked. He has first hand experience with trying to persuade people in his first term. I don’t understand why your citizens aren’t marching everyday. I’m assuming it’s because the mainstream media sane washes what he says instead of actually saying out loud that’s he’s dangerous in many ways and needs to be stopped. The cowardice of your government is jaw droppingly outrageous. Thank you for what you do everyday. It matters. 🇨🇦🙏

Carol Fletez's avatar

You in Canada have a much smaller population But close to 10 million people on NKD3 across our vast country is good.. AND some of us don't have time to write complaints because we're actually trying to do things legally to curb this mess. Tend to your own knitting in Canada. How about stopping clubbing Baby seals for a start. Or any other murder of wildlife or gangs in Quebec?

It might be a good time for Dems in Congress to return to DC and shout to the GOP and the world how insane he is. What are they doing besides posting feeble messages? Show some courage. If not now, when?

Richard Dorset's avatar

We know the spineless Republicans in Congress, with the possible exception of Thomas Massie, will say nothing and do nothing to stop the madness. So it’s time for Dems, as a group, not the occasional comment from one, although I was very proud of my Senator Chris Murphy for explicitly calling for the 25th Amendment on Sunday, to make their outrage and opposition to this madness crystal clear. Time for Schumer and Jeffries to stop hiding behind the decorum that worked before Trump. Time to escalate the message and do it every damn day. Trump says he is going to destroy Iran? Jeffries goes before the cameras and says unequivocally that this is a war crime, Dems oppose it vehemently, and there will be consequences. Can they stop it? No. But Trump’s lunacy must be called out. It must not be allowed to just sit there, in the consciousness of the nation unopposed!

Katy Bolger's avatar

Totally agree. News conferences everyday. A concerted and consistent message from Dem leaders: no war, no money for war. LOUD and clear. Sen. Chris Murphy is an honorable man and has fought for gun control for years against the enormous machine of gun money. Let all the senators, representatives and governors speak out loud and daily: NO WAR, NO BOMBING, NO MURDER OF CHILDREN IN MY NAME.

Dan Leithauser's avatar

I do not like amplifying prior Trump enablers, of which Marjorie Taylor Greene and Massie certainly have been. I am willing to find points of agreement with these same people. Does it make up for prior unhinged support? I do not know, but I am only judging as a human who asks "what have you done for us today?" I would ask that of any representative regardless of party. Right now. Today.

From Former Rep MTG, with some paragraph spacing added for readability. [the image of the post she references we are already familiar with].

On Easter morning, this is what President Trump posted. Everyone in his administration that claims to be a Christian needs to fall on their knees and beg forgiveness from God and stop worshipping the President and intervene in Trump’s madness.

I know all of you and him and he has gone insane, and all of you are complicit. I’m not defending Iran but let’s be honest about all of this. The Strait is closed because the US and Israel started the unprovoked war against Iran based on the same nuclear lies they’ve been telling for decades, that any moment Iran would develop a nuclear weapon. You know who has nuclear weapons? Israel. They are more than capable of defending themselves without the US having to fight their wars, kill innocent people and children, and pay for it.

Trump threatening to bomb power plants and bridges hurts the Iranian people, the very people Trump claimed he was freeing. On Easter, of all days, we as Christians should be reminded that the son of God died and rose from the grave so that we can be forgiven once and for all of our sins. Jesus commanded us to love one another and forgive one another. Even our enemies.

Our President is not a Christian and his words and actions should not be supported by Christians. Christians in the administration should be pursuing peace. Urging the President to make peace. Not escalating war that is hurting people. This NOT what we promised the American people when they overwhelmingly voted in 2024, I know, I was there more than most. This is not making America great again, this is evil.

I feel so frustrated! I wish there was something we could do before November! I saw something posted that the next No Kings rally is possibly being planned for the day before Trump's birthday in June...if so, lets get the word out NOW! I will be there and encourage all I know to do the same...at least its something!

Carol Fletez's avatar

Before that is the May 1st Boycott total stoppage. Don't go to work, don't go to school, don't make appointments, don't buy anything, don't transact any business, just totally STOP for one whole day. May 1st is traditionally Labor Day! Internationally too. Those in Europe who feel we are not doing enough should do the same.

Jami Craig's avatar

When are we organizing? When are those with the know how, the funding, and expertise going to unite us through an organized shut down? Bearing witness without action is nothing more then sitting on the sidelines. It is astounding to me that Democrats in office now, particularly our progressive, have not organized via their pacs or their wealthy donors. Could it be the Uber rich simply are not interested in saving democracy and getting rid of this administration? Why would that be? Because, perhaps, their power and money insulates them from the worst of this government. It’s been said that people aren’t really interested in solving the problems, just making enough money so that the problems don’t apply to them. I almost believe it.

Carol Fletez's avatar

Shutdown is May 1st. Organizing is making the special elections ours to win 30 times now. What are you doing to help?

Camilla's avatar

Yes, like Ann Panda I am humiliated for us, and apologize for us ALLOWING this INSANITY.

Mind boggling, soul boggling complicity, this radical behavior acceptable to the conservatives in the Republican Party. Disgusting & Shameful, a danger to Humanity; AND THEY PREACH “GOD” & “Jesus” …… I guess Jesus wants this despicable behavior ( oh yes, I forgot “He” the “Christ”preached & led His life in this way ). Soulless Capitalists. Capitalism does NOT work. It’s not for equality & fairness, it’s a greedy “I”, a competition for money to improve my life, but no equal opportunity or structure to improve the lives of others.

Sickening. Just as is Racism.

Apologies for our ugly WHITE PRIVILEGE on the backs of OTHER HUMAN BEINGS OF COLOR and what we did and what continues to go on TODAY !

An abomination. I’m so ashamed of what my whiteness represents. This is only the tip of the iceberg for every “ism” out there. Yes, I am looking for a Utopia.

Why should we allow this spineless administration to continue to lead us in this direction??!!

The nuclear code in the hands of Impulsivity and Pure Evil.
