The President of the United States has lost his mind

This morning, for the second day in a row, the President of the United States of America spent the day at the golf course. While the news broke that the United States was running dangerously low on critical munitions and one of our oldest allies publicly compared America’s current human rights record to those of authoritarian regimes, in between rounds of golf, Donald Trump spent his time posting increasingly deranged messages on Truth Social.

Over the course of 5 hours, he posted dozens of times. He shared fake images of politicians fighting over a slice of cheesecake. He teased image after image of a third Trump presidency in 2028 and uploaded an AI image of a wall between the United States and Canada made out of an air filter. He shared variations of an image with him personally seizing Iranian oil tankers seven times. He also shared an image of himself emerging from the mist, leading special forces on a ground mission with the words “GIVE THE ENEMY NIGHTMARES.” The posts just kept coming, with him even going so far as to depict himself as one of America’s Founding Fathers and another AI-generated image of himself standing beside John F. Kennedy.

There didn’t appear to be any thought to how these posts would make him look to the world, beyond trying to make himself look powerful and in control. He failed at both. He cast himself as the “Cosmic Commander” in a fake science fiction movie about conquering outer space. He shared a fake movie poster of himself time-traveling and wearing a red cape, to save George Washington from near death. The movie tagline was “The past was about to change. History was about to be saved.”

He posted himself as a doctor coming to treat the spineless members of his own party. He shared a fake picture of a flooded Washington, D.C. with the Capitol in front of blue flashes of lightning and dark skies with the words, “PANIC IN D.C.” He declared himself “Guardian of the world.” Even though he is the one who keeps dropping bombs, has kidnapped a country’s leader, and started a war. This was just a sample of what he posted today.

This is the President of the United States. Not a troll account, a child who got their hands on a phone, or some random unidentifiable account. These all came from the verified account of the man who holds the most powerful office on earth.

But it isn’t just what he posted, although that is bad enough. It’s when he posted it. While we were all learning about the grave threat our military and country is facing, with the shrinking munition resources, he was posting images of himself conquering Iran and winning the war.

The New York Times reported this weekend that after nearly two weeks of nightly strikes on Iran, the President held back from a wider offensive following a meeting at the White House on Friday. The reason was based on our lack of available inventory of resources. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, and the Vice President, JD Vance, both privately shared their concerns with the President. Caine shared that a larger campaign was possible but that it would dangerously deplete the interceptors our forces in the region rely on to defend themselves. Vance voiced concerns about broader escalation. According to the Times, few if any people in the President’s own inner circle believed that escalating was wise.

NBC News reported something even more alarming. Two senior officials described how American commanders in the region have begun choosing which incoming Iranian missiles and drones to shoot down and which ones to let through. They are having to deliberately allow some to land in order to conserve the shrinking supply of interceptors. The United States military is now rationing its own air defenses. It is letting enemy weapons hit the ground because it doesn’t have the reserves to stop all of them. This is deeply troubling. Our military members are being put in direct harm.

An analysis from the Center for Strategic and International Studies matched classified Pentagon estimates and found that in the first seven weeks of the war, the United States has used roughly 45 percent of its Precision Strike Missiles and nearly half of its Patriot interceptors. Each costs roughly $4 million, while many of the Iranian drones they are being used to destroy cost in the tens of thousands each. But the true cost of Trump’s war can’t be measured only in dollars and cents. It is also being paid in lives. As of this week, 18 American service members have been killed, and more than 450 have been wounded. Just days ago, the Pentagon quietly lowered its official death toll from 18 to 14, arguing that the last four service members died after the ceasefire had been agreed to and thus should not be counted. After mounting backlash over the change, it appears their names were restored over the weekend.

That is the real reason for all the fake war posts and the desperate attempts to distract from what is really happening. We are involved in a war we cannot sustain or win in any real sense of the word.

The administration was so concerned about the truth of our position being exposed that they sent Mike Waltz, the President’s Ambassador to the United Nations, to sit down with Kristen Welker on Meet the Press this morning and sell an alternative reality to the American people.

The interview was a disaster for both Waltz and the administration. He struggled to keep the story straight, backpedaling as he answered her questions. Welker asked him directly whether America was holding back because its military stockpile had been depleted. Waltz began by admitting exactly that, saying that a lot of stockpiles were depleted, before turning the blame to the Biden administration. Then, when Welker pressed him twice on whether he acknowledged they were depleted, he reversed himself. “No,” he said. “I want to be crystal clear. The U.S. military has everything that it needs.” And then, moments after he admitted that the stockpile is depleted, he said this: “The people that are leaking this nonsense deserve to be in jail.”

The interview went south from there. Welker reminded him that the President had promised this conflict would last five to six weeks, and that we are now at the five-month mark, and asked whether the war would be over by the new year. Waltz answered that the war had been going on for 47 years. Welker cut straight through it. “No,” she said, “not in this capacity. Not in this capacity.” He continued to not give her any real answers to her questions but did claim that the military has conducted a “phenomenally successful campaign.” Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, a combat veteran of the Gulf War, came on after Waltz and didn’t hold back. “These guys are flailing,” he said, “and this thing is completely stuck.” He listed the shifting justifications Trump has given for starting this war. First it was regime change and then nuclear weapons. He stated the truth: it was a disaster. Gas is at $4.50 a gallon in his state, and people cannot afford groceries or rent. We entered into a war without a goal and now without an exit.

People outside the United States are seeing what is happening and watching in horror. But they are also getting bolder in their condemnation of what is happening inside our country and outside at the hands of this administration.

At the United Nations, the General Assembly voted to reaffirm Volker Türk as the High Commissioner for Human Rights. One hundred and forty-four nations supported him. The United States was one of only 10 that voted no, in the company of Russia, Israel, and a short list of governments not known for their gentleness toward their own people. The American mission then posted a video declaring that the United Nations human rights system was on its deathbed. And France, our ally since before this country could stand on its own, who helped us win our independence, re-shared that video with a heartbreaking message of its own. “The US used to be a beacon of human rights,” France wrote. “Not anymore. Today, it stands alongside North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali & Russia, isolated. And the world no longer listens to it.” They ended it with the hashtag, AmericaAlone. Trump’s ambassador, Waltz dismissed France’s response as disappointing and called their vote shameful. This is a dark and sad day for anyone who truly loves the United States of America.

This is yet another step in the path to full authoritarian takeover, especially when the Authoritarian leader is in decline and does not want to admit weakness. They perform the role of a powerful leader. They flood what is seen with images of their own greatness to distract from reality. Mussolini filled Italy with monuments to himself while his war crumbled beneath him. The strongmen who came before and after him all did that same kind of trick.

Today marks exactly 100 days until the midterm elections. It marks the start of our fight to take this country back. Our opportunity to slow the destruction and hold Trump and his enablers responsible and accountable for the damage they have unleashed on our once great nation.

I know we are tired. I know it is summer, and we would rather be doing almost anything than listening to the increasingly deranged behavior of a man in severe decline. But we have to keep our eyes and ears open to everything that is happening. We have to make sure we are talking about it with as many people as we can, and we must keep the heat on Trump, Congress, and every one of his enablers. Every single time he mentions a third term, we cannot dismiss it as the ramblings of a madman, because he has never believed the rules apply to him. We must take every threat seriously, even when we know it violates the Constitution. We need to be building the systems to stop him now in case he isn’t simply creating more chaos, drama, and distraction with his words. Our job is to pay attention to everything.

His approval rating sits near the lowest of his second term, around 39 percent. Voters now favor Democrats on the generic congressional ballot by the widest margin we have seen since the House flipped in 2018. The latest polling shows that for the first time in his second term, more voters say the greatest issue facing this country is the threat to our democracy rather than the economy or the border, and that concern continues to grow. Forecasters continue to favor Democrats retaking the House of Representatives. The Senate remains a steeper climb, but it is within reach if this momentum continues. We have 100 days to do just that. I know we will. That is why I still have hope for America. And you should, too.

Picture of the day. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how the world outside feels too calm for everything that’s happening. I keep reminding myself that there is often a calm before a storm, and maybe we’re just gathering our strength for the fight ahead, something my cat is really good at doing.
