The President of the United States had a comedian fired today.
And this is what he had to say about it:
“Great news for America. The ratings-challenged Jimmy Kimmel show is cancelled. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has zero talent and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible.”
Think about that.
The one man in this country whose job is to protect us from foreign attacks, from economic collapse, from corruption and authoritarianism, is instead celebrating the silencing of a late-night host.
Not protecting us.
Not leading us.
Attacking a comedian.
And we have to stop and ask ourselves: why would a world leader spend his precious time doing this to a comedian?
The answer is simple. Because comedians have a unique way of sharing the truth. They pierce through lies with laughter. They strip away illusions with a single punchline. They reach people in ways politicians fear.
This wasn’t about ratings.
It wasn’t about poor performance.
It wasn’t because Jimmy Kimmel isn’t beloved.
It’s because Trump is following the dictator playbook on his retribution tour. While some would celebrate getting elected after a disastrous loss, our president is focused on wreaking havoc on the world while punishing anyone who spoke out against him, and anyone still speaking out now.
He is ruling by ego.
Not in honor of his country.
Jimmy Kimmel Live was taken off the air indefinitely.
Not because the network lost money.
Not because audiences walked away.
But because Trump said he would be “next to go.”
And now he is gone.
The Nazis silenced comedians. Mussolini silenced comedians. Stalin silenced comedians.
Every dictator knows the same truth.
Laughter is dangerous.
Satire is power.
Mockery is kryptonite to men who survive only by fear.
So they outlaw laughter.
They muzzle comedians.
They turn tragedy into a weapon.
That is what is happening today.
Not in a textbook.
Not across an ocean.
Here. In America.
And this is the bitter truth.
This is not about Charlie Kirk.
They do not care about him.
His death is not sacred.
It is useful.
A false flag wrapped in grief.
A convenient excuse to demand silence.
They tell us it was about respect. They tell us it was about protecting the public. They tell us it was about “decency.” None of that is true. What it was really about was control. It was about showing everyone what happens if you step out of line. And it was about fear, about making every comedian, every journalist, every person who speaks up wonder if they are next. That is how free speech dies. Not in one sweeping moment, but in a steady drumbeat of intimidation, one voice silenced at a time until silence itself is the law.
And they know this is reaching far beyond Kimmel himself. His show has a team of writers, producers, crew members, staff, all of whom now face economic collapse because their leader dared to joke about the king. This is how authoritarianism works. Punish not just the dissenter, but everyone around them, so resentment grows and pressure builds. They want Kimmel’s own people to hate him for not keeping his mouth shut. For not bending to the dictator.
And let’s not forget Disney, the parent company of ABC. They caved. They pulled the show. And in doing so, they gave Trump exactly what he wanted. They have blood on their hands for this attack on free speech. History reminds us that major corporations did the same under the Nazis. Volkswagen, Siemens, IBM, even Coca-Cola adapted, profited, and pandered. They believed going along was safer than standing up. That survival was more important than principle. They were wrong then, and Disney is wrong now.
And while they were silencing comedians, the Department of Justice was erasing facts.
A study proving what we already knew. That since 1990, the overwhelming majority of political violence in America has come from the far right. 227 attacks. More than 520 deaths. The numbers were clear. The conclusions undeniable. And yet days after Charlie Kirk was killed, the DOJ scrubbed it from its website. Not because it was wrong. Because it was inconvenient.
Think about that. The government erased its own research because it did not fit Trump’s narrative. That is not democracy. That is propaganda.
And right after that, Trump declared Antifa a “major terrorist organization.” Antifa is not a group. It has no headquarters. No roster. No chain of command. It is a loose movement, nothing more. But that does not matter when your goal is fear. Now, with the stroke of a pen, anyone can be branded a terrorist. Protesters. Journalists. Activists. Anyone standing in the way.
This is the same “Antifa” he falsely claimed stormed the Capitol on January 6. Yet one of his first moves back in office was pardoning the very people who actually carried out the attack: the Jan 6 insurrectionists. It makes no sense because it isn’t supposed to. This is not truth. This is propaganda. A lie told loudly and often enough to rewrite reality, to convince his followers that up is down and enemy is friend and friend is enemy.
Scrub the facts.
Rewrite the enemy.
Call it law and order.
Follow the playbook.
And while we were watching that unfold, the Senate quietly rewrote the rules.
Republicans changed procedure so they could ram through 48 of Trump’s nominees in one package. Sub-Cabinet officials. Ambassadors. People chosen not for their experience but for their loyalty. They stripped away debate. They stripped away accountability. They stacked the deck.
This is not just politics as usual. This is how you build a regime. You take away the guardrails. You replace experts with loyalists. You make sure that every lever of government answers to the leader, not to the people.
It is not chaos. It is calculation.
And then there is Epstein.
Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee tried to subpoena records from four major banks. JPMorgan Chase. Bank of America. Deutsche Bank. BNY Mellon. Those records traced $1.5 billion in suspicious transactions linked to Epstein’s trafficking network. They could have revealed who enabled him, who profited, who is still being protected.
Republicans blocked it. Jim Jordan shut it down without debate.
So the truth stays buried. And who are we protecting by keeping it that way? If Trump isn’t in the Epstein files, then why not release them? What’s the fear? Is he worried this is the one thing that could finally break his hold on the MAGA cult?
But of course, not all investigations are blocked. Not the ones that benefit Trump and his regime. Trump insists the birthday card he supposedly wrote, complete with a crude sketch of a woman, given to Epstein more than 20 years ago, is a forgery. And so, naturally, Kash Patel, the director of the FBI, has stepped in to promise a full investigation. He even told lawmakers he would personally handle it. What a waste of time. What a disgraceful use of the FBI. And what a perfect example of a corrupt government serving power instead of the people.
That is not justice. That is distraction. Bury the money trail, investigate a birthday card, and pretend the government is doing its job.
Look at these pieces side by side. A president bragging about silencing a comedian. A Justice Department scrubbing its own research to erase the violence of the far right. A movement that isn’t even a formal group suddenly branded as a terrorist organization. A Senate rewriting rules to ram through nearly fifty loyalists in a single vote. A Congress burying evidence of billion-dollar Epstein transactions while the FBI chases down a birthday card.
None of this is disconnected. None of it is coincidence. These are not isolated outrages. Together they form the architecture of authoritarianism. Muzzle the truth tellers. Erase the facts. Criminalize the opposition. Fill the ranks with loyalists. Protect the powerful. Distract the public. This is how democracies are hollowed out. This is how regimes are built.
Do you see the pattern?
Silence the comedians.
Scrub the studies.
Label the protesters as terrorists.
Ram through the loyalists.
Bury the evidence.
Distract with noise.
That is the authoritarian playbook. And Trump is following it step by step.
History tells us this story. Over and over.
And every single time, people cheered their own chains.
That is what is happening here. Trump’s supporters are celebrating censorship as if it were victory. They are applauding the silencing of comedians and the scrubbing of studies as if it makes them safer. But here is the truth. If Jimmy Kimmel loses his platform, they lose theirs too. If journalists are silenced, their voices are silenced too. Authoritarianism never stops with the enemy. It always comes for the faithful.
And I will say this plainly. This is not brainwashing anymore. This is willful ignorance. This is people too afraid or too selfish to admit what is happening. They are campaigning for their own rights to be stripped away. Cheering the destruction of the very freedoms they claim to hold dear.
And let us not forget. The only lawful limit on free speech in this country is incitement to violence. Trump broke that rule on January 6. He incited a mob to attack the Capitol. He incited violence against his own government. And he got away with it.
Now he is stripping away the rights the Constitution guarantees to the rest of us.
That is dictatorship. That is fascism. Every word we have for authoritarianism applies here. None of them are too strong. Because when you silence comedians, erase facts, criminalize protest, stack the government with loyalists, and bury evidence, you are not leading a democracy. You are ruling a regime.
History is clear. None of these regimes last. Not the Nazis. Not Mussolini. Not Stalin. They all burned hot. They all burned cruel. And they all collapsed under the weight of their lies.
The only question is how much damage they do before they fall, and whether enough of us fight in time to stop it.
And I want to leave you with this poem. It is something I think about a lot.
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
This has never been more important than in this moment.
We could swap out Communists for Democrats.
We could swap out Socialists for “left-wing radicals”.
We could swap out trade unionists for the press.
We could swap out Jews for immigrants or for women who need health care.
Every group they target is a test. Every silence is permission. Every cheer for censorship is a green light for the next attack. The playbook of darkness always works the same way: isolate one group at a time until there is no one left to resist.
This poem was written by Pastor Martin Niemöller, a German Lutheran pastor who at first supported Hitler but later resisted the Nazi regime and was imprisoned for it. His words are a warning from someone who lived through darkness.
I know the times are getting darker and darker. I feel it too. And this is the first time I can honestly say my concern is at a level where it has never been before.
But as I say every single night, we can never give up hope no matter how dark it feels.
If there is ever a moment to take to the streets, this is it. And I don’t say that lightly.
This is your sign to join local organizations. Call your local Democratic Party, even if you are not a Democrat, and tell them you need to be part of the fight.
If you are in California, we must talk to every single person we know about voting YES on Prop 50, the Election Rigging Response Act. I have been doing that, and about 75 percent of people I talk to don’t even know anything about it. Some only vaguely know from the ads that make it “sound bad” because of the nonstop propaganda flooding the airwaves. There is big money behind the “no” side.
Prop 50 is a line in the sand. If we want to have hope, it has to be a yes. It is not just about passing a proposition. It is about sending a message that there are still checks and balances. That we are not going to be silent. That we are drawing the line.
And if you live in a Democratic state, call your governor tomorrow. Post on their social media. Email them. Ask your friends and family to do the same. Tell them we need them to unite with other Democratic governors. Tell them we need a unified front.
Because right now, there is none. The Democratic Party has to figure this out. They need to figure it out today, not tomorrow. We cannot wait. We cannot waste time on litmus tests or purity tests. I do not care if they like each other. I do not care about grudges or factions. We need to pressure those governors to come together this second.
Because history is watching. And the playbook of darkness is not waiting for us to catch up.
And I believe in us.
I believe in America.
I hope you still do, too.
I’ll see you tomorrow,
Heather
