The legal walls are closing in on Trump

Trump disappeared from public view after hosting a lavish governors’ dinner while the government remained partially shut down and crises piled up, from the Epstein files to threats against Iran to the Supreme Court striking down his tariffs. When he did resurface, it was on speakerphone in a locker room, calling the U.S. men’s hockey team while the FBI director partied with players overseas on a taxpayer-funded trip. He even offered to send military jets to fly the team to his State of the Union, not to honor them, but to fill seats in what was expected to be a half-empty room.

Meanwhile, a massive banner bearing Trump’s face was hung across the front of the Department of Justice, the building inscribed with the words “Where Law Ends Tyranny Begins,” in a move pulled straight from the authoritarian playbook. And in one of the most absurd moments yet, Trump announced he was sending a hospital ship to Greenland, a country with universal healthcare, while both U.S. Navy hospital ships were actually stuck in dry dock. This came right after Denmark’s military saved an American sailor’s life off the coast of Greenland, and Trump responded not with gratitude but with a manufactured crisis designed to frame Greenland as needy.
