Yesterday morning, the Supreme Court handed the President of the United States one of the most dangerous expansions of presidential power in nearly a century. In a 6-3 decision in Trump v. Slaughter, the Court ruled that the president can fire the leaders of independent federal agencies for any reason, or no reason at all, overturning 91 years of settled precedent. Justice Sotomayor read her dissent from the bench, warning that the ruling gives the president “a power unknown even to the English Crown against which the Founders revolted.” And how did Trump spend his afternoon with all that new power? He signed an executive order about the right to repair cars, telling a story about people being “arrested for fixing their car.” It wasn’t true. Nobody was being arrested. He invented a problem and then signed a memorandum to fix it.
The ruling means there is no longer any continuity in the American government. Every incoming president can now walk in and fire the heads of more than two dozen agencies on day one, the ones that protect your food, your workplace, your financial markets, and the safety of nuclear power plants, replacing career experts with loyalists who answer only to him. It tells every nation on earth that any partnership with the United States is only as durable as one president’s mood. And when a reporter asked Trump if he would sign the bipartisan housing bill that Congress spent months building to address the affordability crisis crushing American families, he called it “a yawn,” saying the only thing that matters is the SAVE America Act, his bill to require proof of citizenship, mandate photo ID, and eliminate most mail-in voting. Not whether families can afford a home. How much he can restrict the right to vote.
But not everything broke his way, and that is where the hope lives. The Court protected states’ right to count mail-in ballots postmarked on time, a genuine victory that matters for November. It let stand the finding that he sexually abused E. Jean Carroll. And it shielded the Federal Reserve’s Lisa Cook. In four months, the American people speak.
