The Day the Press Was Muzzled
On the president’s orders, a third boat was blown up in international waters this week. Three people killed. No trial. No jury. Just the commander in chief bragging about being judge, jury, and executioner.
Tonight's post will be a bit lighter in commentary than usual. I am back on the road, still trying to make sense of what is happening to our country. But I’m happy to report that I am feeling a shift.
There is more kindness and connection in the world than I’ve seen in a long time. It feels like most people are tired. Tired of being weaponized by this administration to hate each other. And they’re pushing back in the only ways they can. I can feel it. And it gives me hope that’s been missing.
As usual, the far-right MAGA cult is just loud. They are not the majority. And they are shrinking.
But while their numbers shrink, the damage from those still clinging to power keeps getting bigger. The Pentagon is now forcing journalists to sign pledges not to publish unless the government approves it first. The FCC is threatening networks into silence. The Census is being rewritten to erase millions of people. Vaccines that save lives are being stripped of their protections. And prosecutors are being told to invent crimes against political enemies.
It looks chaotic if you take it one headline at a time. But it isn’t chaos. It’s coordinated. It’s a blueprint. And it’s dismantling democracy piece by piece.
Let’s start with the Pentagon. Reporters got an email today: sign a pledge or lose your badge. The pledge says you cannot publish any information unless it’s been formally approved. Not just classified material. Even unclassified information. Even the kind of reporting the public has always had a right to see.
If a journalist breaks the pledge? They’re out. Badge gone. Access gone. Oversight gone.
The Pentagon Press Association called it an attack on press freedom. The National Press Club said it destroys accountability. And they’re right. This isn’t about security. It’s about control. It’s about silencing the watchdogs so the most powerful military in the world can operate in the dark.
Thomas Jefferson once said, “Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”
That’s how essential a free press was to the Founding Fathers. They didn’t see it as optional. They saw it as the backbone of accountability, the only way citizens could keep watch over those in power. And now, with the Pentagon demanding journalists sign pledges not to publish unapproved information, we are watching that backbone break.
And once the watchdogs are gone, abuse thrives. Wars get waged in shadows. Money gets siphoned without scrutiny. Mistakes get buried before anyone knows they happened. That’s how democracy dies, not with a dramatic explosion, but with a locked door and a silenced press.
Now look at the FCC. Chair Brendan Carr threatened ABC after Jimmy Kimmel mocked MAGA politics. He even floated taking away ABC’s license. And days later? Kimmel was suspended.
Michael Eisner
Michael Eisner, who ran Disney during its golden years, blasted it as intimidation. He’s not some partisan warrior. He’s a man who knows what pressure looks like from the inside, and he said this is wrong.
Even Ted Cruz, who seemingly hates Kimmel, compared Carr’s behavior to mob tactics. Like a mafia boss warning, “Nice business you’ve got here. Be a shame if something happened to it.”
This is what censorship looks like. It doesn’t come all at once with a big dramatic switch. It creeps in. A comedian silenced. A network intimidated. A chill spreading until nobody dares to speak out.
And when comedy dies, a piece of democracy dies with it. Satire has always been how we cut through propaganda. Twain did it, Carlin did it, Saturday Night Live did it. It’s laughter that reminds us of truth. And if laughter disappears, so does one of our most human defenses against authoritarianism.
Then there’s the census. By law, it happens every ten years. The last was in 2020. The next is due in 2030. But Trump dismantled the Census Board, installed a loyalist, and is now demanding a new count on his terms. The goal? Erase immigrants and anyone else he can find a way to remove.
You have to wonder what other changes he will make that will benefit him and his desperate power grab to stay president long past his expiration date.
Because the census isn’t just numbers on a page. It’s power. It decides congressional seats. It directs billions in funding for schools, hospitals, and infrastructure. If you cut people out of the count, you cut their communities out of America itself.
Imagine the government pretending two of your kids don’t exist. And then slashing your family’s budget in half because of it. That’s what Trump is doing at a national scale. Erasing communities to consolidate power.
That’s not governance. That’s theft.
Public health? Same story. RFK Jr.’s CDC advisers voted to drop the recommendation for COVID vaccines, calling it “individual choice.” It sounds empowering. But it isn’t.
Because those recommendations are the backbone of public health. They decide what insurance covers. What pharmacies stock. What doctors prescribe. Without them, coverage dries up. Pharmacies pull back. Doctors stop offering vaccines out of fear.
That’s not freedom. That’s sabotage. And if it continues, it will cost lives.
Justice is under siege, too. A U.S. Attorney in Virginia resigned after being pressured to prosecute New York Attorney General Letitia James. The problem? There was no evidence of fraud. He was told to invent a crime. And when he refused, he was pushed out.
That’s how corruption spreads. Not with flashing lights and smashed gavels, but quietly, prosecutors turned into weapons against enemies and shields for friends. If the law can be bent that easily, then it’s no longer law at all.
And then there’s Trump’s own words.
Here’s what he posted on Truth Social this week:
“On my Orders, the Secretary of War ordered a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel affiliated with a Designated Terrorist Organization conducting narcotrafficking in the USSOUTHCOM area of responsibility. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was trafficking illicit narcotics, and was transiting along a known narcotrafficking passage enroute to poison Americans. The strike killed 3 male narcoterrorists aboard the vessel, which was in international waters. No U.S. Forces were harmed in this strike. STOP SELLING FENTANYL, NARCOTICS, AND ILLEGAL DRUGS IN AMERICA, AND COMMITTING VIOLENCE AND TERRORISM AGAINST AMERICANS!!!”
That’s almost incoherent. It reads like a rant, not a presidential statement. And it’s riddled with holes. How do we know these men were drug smugglers? How do we know they were terrorists? We don’t. All we know is that they were killed on the president’s order.
And here’s the bigger question: since when do we execute people in international waters? When did we stop giving people a trial to prove guilt before we just execute them? Since when do we give the president unchecked power to decide who lives and who dies?
And if we’re okay with this, what happens when another country decides our boat looks suspicious? What happens when Americans are sightseeing in the Caribbean and a foreign government decides we look like smugglers? Do we shrug when they blow us out of the water?
Of course not. We’d call it murder.
So why aren’t we calling it that now?
This isn’t a random set of headlines tossed together. It’s a map. A plan. A blueprint for dismantling democracy right in front of us. It is Project 2025 and it is just ramping up.
This is what it looks like when a country is dismantled piece by piece. Not with tanks rolling down the street. Not with a single dramatic moment. But with steady erosion. Oversight chipped away. Freedoms narrowed. Institutions hollowed out until nothing is left.
And the only way it stops is if we refuse to look away.
Because this isn’t just about Washington. It’s about whether you get to know the truth. Whether your child’s school gets funding. Whether your doctor can keep you safe. Whether your community has a voice. Whether your life has value.
It’s about the soul of America.
And the question is whether we’ll let it be dismantled. Or whether we’ll finally rise up and do something to stop this.
I already know my answer. I’m going to keep getting louder and louder until America remembers who we are and what we stand for.
Because I still believe this country is worth fighting for. And I hope you do too.
I’ll see you tomorrow,
Heather

Hasn't he tried to label the Democratic Party a domestic terrorist organization? Maybe they should post warnings at coastal marinas.
