Five years after January 6, it’s clear that day was not the end of something, but a warning that many people chose to ignore. A president openly pushed a lie, sent an angry crowd toward the Capitol, and watched it turn violent. What followed was a failure to hold anyone truly accountable, which allowed the danger to grow.
The hardest part is not just what one man did, but living among people who saw it happen and still voted for him again. As truth is replaced with propaganda and history is rewritten, the threat has only increased. Still, there is relentless hope that the country can be repaired if people are willing to face reality and demand better from those in power.
Heather, you have said it all right here. Heartbroken and angry am I as well, along with a resigned disgust that I will be spending the rest of my life helping to clean up the shit from this disastrous administration. I’d like to share your hope but there are so many willfully ignorant voters who still believe their guy is The One who will save them. Trump cannot even save his own self; at this point, he has pulled his own plug and will be gone before this new year is over. But unless we stop Vance and the rest of the Cabinet, democracy is still denied and the America we once had does not exist. I want my country back.
I want to believe that MAGAts are finally seeing the despot for what he is, a grifter, a liar, a thief, an idiot, etc. I want to believe they really are ready to disown him but they don't see an off-ramp. They have invested their time and treasure in his madness and don't want to experience the humiliation of admitting they have been so wrong.
It's similar to why Trump is so fixatedon Greenland. He wants to leave NATO but knows Congress won't approve so he'll gin up a conflict against a NAOT member-nation and get us kicked out.
Somehow we have to give MAGAts a way off the crazy train.
Well said as always Heather. Trump and Miller's most recent rants claiming America's power to do whatever we want in "our" hemisphere have me thinking about the basic, tribal nature of man. Prior to WWll, the world was constant warring between tribes and countries, a world where might made right and where rule was defined by us vs. them. Trump, MAGA and their enablers (esp. Fox News and elected Republicans) are a modern expression of this inherent tribalism fully unconstrained. With this view, January 6 was for them righteous and worthy, and becomes more so with the passage of time and the re-writing of history. It seems like we are in a constant state of waiting for this fever to break so we can return to a state of "normalcy". I hope we can break this and regain our country's Democratic promise, but my doubts grow daily as we wait and wait for a leader to emerge. A leader with a voice of clarity, conviction and courage to fight against this tribalism that threatens America from within. I am stunned at the lack of fight from the Democratic party. Are they too busy with focus groups, polling and election strategy? It infuriates me and endangers our country. I still have hope but it dims as time passes and nothing is done to stop the madness and evil.
Thank you so much for this Heather. You put into words all that I am feeling and more.
