This morning, while House Republican leaders stood at a podium celebrating the most significant bipartisan achievement of this Congress, a housing bill that passed the Senate 85 to 5 and the House 358 to 32, the President of the United States posted on Truth Social and killed it. He would not sign it. Not until Congress passed the SAVE America Act, a voting bill his own party has told him repeatedly does not have the votes. No one saw it coming. Speaker Mike Johnson had spoken with him 20 minutes earlier and believed the signing was still on. In Statuary Hall, workers had already set up the signing desk with the presidential seal. By noon, they were taking the stage apart. And inside a closed-door lunch sold to the press as a unity meeting, Senator Bill Cassidy stood up and began shouting at the president. Trump told him to sit down. He refused. Trump called him a lunatic. Cassidy called him brother. Trump told him he was not his brother. The party is fracturing in real time.
The bill he refused to sign, the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, was the most comprehensive housing legislation in decades, limiting investors from buying up single-family homes and lowering costs for first-time buyers and renters. He called it “of minor importance” and walked away. What he wants instead is the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register, impose strict photo ID rules, and practically ban mail-in voting, requirements that would disproportionately block women who changed their names, elderly voters, rural communities, and disabled voters. This is not about election security. It is about survival. Trump knows his approval sits at 37 percent. He knows he cannot win in November on the economy or the war. So he is trying to win it by changing who gets to vote. Nine minutes before he killed the housing bill, he posted that his poll numbers had never been higher. That is the distance between his reality and ours.
But the most chilling moment came that night. Hours after shouting at the president, Bill Cassidy was summoned to the White House and briefed in the Situation Room by Vance and Witkoff. When he came out, his vote on a war powers resolution had flipped. He voted no. That is how these regimes work. You push back in the morning, and by nightfall, you are brought into a room and reminded of something. We may never know what was said behind those doors. But we know the pattern, and we know the leverage was strong enough to reverse a vote on war and peace within hours. And yet, the exodus is real. Every artist who refused to perform at his Freedom 250 event made a choice. Every state that declined made a choice. The machine is still working, and it is still losing people faster than it can pull them back. November is coming.
