At 8:07 p.m. tonight, the President of the United States shared his first and only social media post of the entire day. Coming from a man who routinely posts dozens, sometimes well over a hundred times a day, often through the middle of the night, the silence was unexpected. After traveling back to America under what is now being reported as an extreme threat to his safety, Donald Trump has spent the day locked away from the public eye, choosing the safety of the White House gates during this uncertain time.
In that one and only post was something so important to him, so urgent in his mind, that it became the only thing he wanted to tell the American people all day. It had absolutely nothing to do with the duties of the presidency, the NATO summit, or the threats against him. It was about himself. It was about renaming an airport in his name. This is what he wanted the American people to read tonight.
Although they seem haphazard, random, ill considered, these measures to defang the CDC are designed to do one thing. Kill people. Not the sort that count, they are well looked after because they're criminally rich. Everything they are doing is to shed some underperforming assets. Poor and marginalised people.
It is curious that those who have put themselves in charge of “shedding underperforming assets” are themselves underperforming in many ways. Both RFK and DJT are physically unwell and mentally wayward, and ought not to be in charge of anything.

My mother came to the US from Hungary after the war. Her one surviving family member, her brother moved to Israel, had a family and I even stayed with them on a kibbutz for a year between the 68 and 71 wars.
Their family was very large, from the border between Czechoslovakia and Hungary, the father (my grandfather) a winemaker. Her problems didn’t stop there as she married. My father, whose family didn’t accept her because she was an immigrant regardless of being Jewish. How about that for a double whammy. But she strived and had an incredible life and was one of the most incredibly alive, wonderful, cheerful optimistic person I’ve ever met in my life.

The younger ones (divided into young adults and adults who should know better), are all on social media and that is what forms their thoughts and beliefs. Russia and others have been f**ing around with our social media for almost 20 years. People believe stuff that is outrageous because they don't read it once, they read it daily. Twump et al have created an enemy (dark skinned people) and an adversary (Democrats). They have pinpointed the problems in your community: women and abortions and they have targeted a population so small and so marginalized (trans people) as to be laughable. They are bullies and they know what they are doing. Meanwhile they have deified a monster (Twump) as the only one to lead us out of the darkness. Twump brought in the fruitcakes like Kennedy and the cretins like Hogsbreath and the opportunists like little marco and Corporal Judy Vance. Well, I want to know: how long do we have to endure this? I don't know how I could look at my NYC high school students, always a rainbow of skin colors and religions, a spectrum of place of origin and economic situation. I know what the Black NYC kids would say to me: I told you so. They did for many years "tell me so" and I would always say, but, it's better, we have come a long way, both in our laws and our culture. I got a lot of tongue clicking and eye rolling and now, I think I should apologize to all those kids. I feel the same, Katy. I'm 70yo, a Navy veteran, and have three grandchildren below age 10. I truly remember a better US. There has always been division, but not ever like this. But I, too, am running out of time and fear what is to come for my grandchildren.
My kid is 26 and I fear that she will not enjoy the freedoms that we have. I fear that women will become second-class citizens with fewer rights than men. I haven't got forever. How do we come back from this and ensure it never happens again? The country is so divided and most people don't know what it is they are fighting about or even fighting for. Is this the deal? Is this what we have come to? Is there anyway out? Most of the engaged people writing here, or the vast majority reading articles like Heather's are retired, so older. The younger ones (divided into young adults and adults who should know better), are all on social media and that is what forms their thoughts and beliefs. Russia and others have been f**ing around with our social media for almost 20 years. People believe stuff that is outrageous because they don't read it once, they read it daily. Twump et al have created an enemy (dark skinned people) and an adversary (Democrats). They have pinpointed the problems in your community: women and abortions and they have targeted a population so small and so marginalized (trans people) as to be laughable. They are bullies and they know what they are doing. Meanwhile they have deified a monster (Twump) as the only one to lead us out of the darkness. Twump brought in the fruitcakes like Kennedy and the cretins like Hogsbreath and the opportunists like little marco and Corporal Judy Vance. Well, I want to know: how long do we have to endure this? How far do they get to go before we stop them? Where are the leaders with the will, appeal and power to rein this in, to stop social media's destructive power, to curb AI as the only future? Who will help us? Where are we going? When does it end? How does it end?

Thanks, I loved the IFLA piece, so right on (and I am a former history teacher, so, relatable). I don't know how I could teach history today. I don't know how I could look at my NYC high school students, always a rainbow of skin colors and religions, a spectrum of place of origin and economic situation. I know what the Black NYC kids would say to me: I told you so. They did for many years "tell me so" and I would always say, but, it's better, we have come a long way, both in our laws and our culture. I got a lot of tongue clicking and eye rolling and now, I think I should apologize to all those kids. Btw, I recently read a wise person who said you know you have reached a certain age when someone says to you, "I told you so," And you reply, "Thank you, you did."
I feel the same, Katy. I'm 70yo, a Navy veteran, and have three grandchildren below age 10. I truly remember a better US. There has always been division, but not ever like this. I saw someone replied to you giving you other sources for info and I'm going to check them out, too. I know we have to hang in there. Everyone says we have to have hope. But I, too, am running out of time and fear what is to come for my grandchildren.
My kid is 26 and I fear that she will not enjoy the freedoms that we have. I fear that women will become second-class citizens with fewer rights than men. I fear all the work that Black people, gay people and women have done to move this country toward a more perfect union will all be undone and she will live in that dark world. Just responding to your final paragraph. We all know that there are parasites and diseases burbling under the surface, and another plague is making its way through the atmosphere. They don't announce themselves, they don't call ahead - they are sneaky and deadly. Most of this will come through people, not vegetables.
