Pete Hegseth stood at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs beneath a redesigned military seal that looked like something pulled from 1930s Germany, and told cadets that “the flyovers will continue until morale improves.” This is the man whose department was forced to admit that eight sailors attached to the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group attempted suicide during a deployment that went more than 260 days without a port call. They dismiss the suffering of our troops as fake news, then offer more flyovers to fix the morale problem they insist does not exist. Behind all the flags, staged workouts, and speeches about warriors, they are trying to rebuild our military as a personal instrument of the Trump Regime.
At Quantico, the approximately 600 people in the audience were handpicked to meet appearance standards, according to the Wall Street Journal. Hegseth was giving Trump the “central casting” military he wanted. Hegseth bragged about firing 10% of our generals and admirals and announced another wave of leadership cuts. He is removing the people who would push back against an unlawful order. He demanded the “highest male standard only,” promoted widespread testosterone testing, and announced an Office of Religious Affairs with a direct line to him. He put Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey, whose companies already do enormous business with the Pentagon, alongside Newt Gingrich in Project Meridian to study the future of warfare. Then he stood in front of our military and used the word “treason” to attack the press. They want obedience inside the chain of command and fear among the people telling us what is happening.
We do not have to accept the image Hegseth is selling us. Calling this propaganda takes away the power he wants it to have, and a Democratic Congress gives us a path toward holding him accountable through impeachment. Check your voter registration through your state’s official website, and ask friends and family to do the same. When I watched him in Colorado Springs, I also remembered the people my family met there, their care for service members, their pride in the Olympic Training Center, and the beauty of Pikes Peak. I remembered feeling weak from the altitude and still wanting to see that extraordinary view. That country still exists. Hegseth can redesign an eagle and tell soldiers what they should look like, but he cannot decide what America means to the rest of us. We can keep building a country worth fighting for.
