I hope you know how much we appreciate your thoughtful, intelligent analysis of what's happening, day in and day out. I don't know how you do it, but thank you.

I agree, Heather has become a voice of truth and reason while looking into the darkness around us. Her closing thoughts today about kindness, hit home with me and I expect for many of us, who refuse to let go of the American values we live by every day. We need to share this fight for our Democracy together.

Please remember if you hand power over to one man (Hitler) he will find ways to surround himself with similar dangerous and radicalised men and women to do his biding.

What is happening in USA is very very dangerous. The leader is weak and the enablers are stepping up to take over with terrifying and maniacal agenders. Both Miller and Hegseth are pushing forward their distorted ideas which will lead to a country run like China or Russia with only one voice. You have to start pushing back hard. As Heather says and I so agree be kind be loving and be truthful.

Hi Heather,

What I absolutely cannot understand, is how the military, which in my mind are sensible, intelligent folks, get along with all this, after explicitly having been told that it is correct to refuse illegal orders. Why didn’t they arrest and imprison Hegseth? There is no reason for this war, other than to satisfy Trump’s ego, and agree to a request of his friend Natanyahu, who is as corrupt as Trump himself, and both without any smatter of compassion.

More excellent reporting. I have come to rely on Heather more than the NYT or any other outlet for understanding the nutso behavior of this administration.

Every act of kindness is also an act of resistance against this nazi regime. They desire to strip us all of our humanity-kindness is anathema to them. Please, continue to be kind. The world needs it. Each of us needs it. 💙

Have been reading your posts for awhile and today became a paid subscriber.

Trump posts, a threat to “reign” "all Hell" down on Iran with "Glory be to God" during Easter and Passover on Saturday April 4, 2026.

Osama Bin Laden, in October 2001 said, “America has been hit by God Almighty... thank God for that. God is great." “May God show them His wrath and give them what they deserve.”

There was another in history that invoked God before reigning down upon them. Here’s just two statements in his words:

“Christ was the greatest early fighter in the battle against the world enemy, the Jews … The work that Christ started but could not finish, I — Adolf Hitler — will conclude.” - Christmas Celebration 1936

“I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty Creator. By warding off the Jews, I am fighting for the Lord’s work.” - Reichstag Speech 1938 Adolf Hitler

Every unjust war in history has been fought in God's name. It was a lie then. It's a lie now. It will be a lie in the future, and I'm pretty sure God wants no part of any of this.

Here in Britain we’ve got the embarrassment of the forthcoming visit of our king to visit your would be King. There is much in your article which suggests that no such visit should take place. Apart from our prime minister being a bit of a drip who can be relied upon to do the opposite of what anyone might regard to be a sensible action, our king is implicated in the Epstein files. He and his mum paid millions to cover up his brother’s disgusting behaviour. Next if the king does pay a visit your president will want to demonstrate Americans military might and this involves a parade and this will involve our king standing next to Hegseth who everybody knows is a self proclaimed war criminal. But going back to our drippy Prime Minister he seems to be totally unaware that the Royal family has got something of a record for sucking up to fascists. The king must surely know this as he’s only king because his uncle was notorious for his admiration of Hitler and his evil crew although the final nail in the coffin what his marriage to a somewhat exotic divorcee which couldn’t be tolerated by the ultra Christian establishment of the time.

The founding fathers of our country (yes, they were all men) could have given control of the new government to the generals and military men who had made the new country possible. Instead, they had the wisdom to see that civilian control of the military would prevent military dictatorship and ensure the armed forces remained subordinate to elected leadership. Surely, the founders never imagined the “people” would elect a crazy, sick, pathological narcissist bent on destroying the democracy they were creating, while the generals trying to save it are being fired.

It struck me today, as I described elsewhere, that he resembles a book whose subsequent pages bear no relationship to any previous pages. None.

He just makes shit up.

To him, its real.

His pov is dictated by whomever was last whispering in his ear.

What a life hey?

Heather I am so glad I found you! I read you every day and share your column with as many people as possible. Thank you for your honest reporting!

We have to keep in mind that its our leaders not the people who are at war with each other! I firmly believe that the people of the Middle East and every day Americans would get along just fine! Its the people at the top who thrive on power and money that have lost sight of human kindness.

It astonishing to me how Pete Hegseth was ever confirmed as Secretary of Defense! He is an angry man with extremely low self esteem, and obviously feels he needs to prove his manhood. Shame on Congress (Republicans) for bowing to Trump and confirming this incompetent!

The end of your newsletter gave me great hope! You are right...its the little things that connect people and bring them together! I will be one of those who practice these kindnesses!

Heather, I became a devoted follower, subscriber, and admirer of your incredible postings and happily see that I am not alone when I read other people’s comments. You have an amazing ability to analyze and describe the madness around us, but always leave us with hope, inspiration, and tangible things we can all do to protect ourselves from despair and little things we can all do to return us to sanity and the country we all love but sadly took for granted for too long.

The first time I read your work I had to try to learn more about you. A Google search was helpful but still didn’t satisfy my curiosity. The story of you and your family, your passion for travel and learning about the people you encountered and your sincere effort to understand their trials and sufferings…yours was not a sudden revelation but an evolution.

Your writings resonated from the very beginning. I just turned 79 this week, am a retired MD, and have always been enthralled with American history and politics, passions that have become so relevant in these times. To the extent my education and career allowed, I have been a part-time activist for workers’ rights, demonstrator against the war in Vietnam and for civil rights and volunteer for candidates and causes in which I believed. I have always practiced small acts of kindness and derive much joy and satisfaction. I believe we have much in common.

Please keep up your wonderful work.

Thank you!

James

I imagine if Trump is incapacitated, we have no moral or ethical human in the WH to invoke the 25th Amendment, do we?

My guess-they want to determine that they have cemented their power before allowing Vance to take over-he is so unpopular-even with the maga/nazis-that they fear they’d be overthrown. They’ll prop him up as long as it suits them to keep the cult in line until they feel secure enough that they can’t ever be ousted. Just my opinion, of course.

Thank you Heather for your daily writings. I, like so many are watching what is happening here with exhaustion, fear and anger. I appreciate you and other independent journalists working hard to get the truth out, despite the exhaustion and fear you must certainly be feeling. You are reaching people.

Small acts of kindness, a great message for Easter. I try to practice it even (and perhaps especially) when I suspect the other person has a different worldview.
