Pete Hegseth isn’t fooling anyone
The Secretary of Defense stood at the Pentagon podium and declared that Operation Epic Fury was “a historic and overwhelming victory.” He read a list of dead Iranian leaders like a scorecard, said he had “skipped over a bunch” and “could go on and on.” He did not have time to say a single American name. Thirteen service members have come home in caskets. More than 365 have come home wounded.
The ceasefire he was celebrating was already falling apart before he left the room. Iran, the UAE, and Kuwait all reported ongoing attacks within hours. The parties couldn’t even agree on what they had agreed to. Before this war, the Strait of Hormuz was open. Now Iran controls it and is planning to charge $2 million per ship to pass through. Gas wasn’t $4 a gallon. International inspectors still had access to Iran’s nuclear program. And thirteen Americans who were alive before February 28th were still coming home to their families. On every single metric, we are worse off than before this war started. And now the president is floating a “joint venture” with the country he just bombed to split shipping fees on a waterway that was free and open before he started the war.
And then, Trump posted that the military is staying, and if it falls apart, “the shootin’ starts, bigger, and better, and stronger than anyone has ever seen before.” He said the military is “looking forward to its next Conquest.” Senate Democrats announced they will force another vote on a War Powers Resolution this week. Thirteen articles of impeachment have been filed. Over 80 Democrats are calling for removal. And every senator who voted to give this president a blank check will have to answer for it in November.
