New Yorkers overwhelmingly reject Trump at NBA Finals

As the national anthem played inside Madison Square Garden before Game 3 of the NBA Finals, the broadcast cameras found Donald Trump standing in salute, his granddaughter beside him. Within seconds, a wave of boos rolled through the crowd, growing louder until it overwhelmed everything else. Thousands of New Yorkers packed into one of the most famous arenas in the country made their feelings known all at once. Trump stood there smiling, either unable to accept it or pretending it wasn’t happening. But his granddaughter knew. The smile left her face, replaced by awkward blinking and deep discomfort. She read the room instantly. He could not.

He came as the first sitting president to ever attend an NBA Finals game, and his presence forced a security lockdown across midtown Manhattan. The free watch party outside the arena, the one where thousands of fans who couldn’t afford tickets stand shoulder to shoulder and watch together, was canceled because of him. The part that belonged to everyone, the part that cost nothing and meant the most, was sacrificed so one man could attend. Then he fell asleep during the game. Then he left early. And a new Reuters/Ipsos poll explains the boos. His approval sits at 35 percent, with just 29 percent approving of his handling of the economy and Iran, and only 21 percent approving of his handling of inflation.

The hardest part of this moment isn’t his recklessness or the country turning on him. It’s that even the people who see it clearly are getting tired of looking. A country doesn’t lose its memory all at once. It loses it one tired person at a time, until the thing everyone once saw clearly becomes background noise. The booing in that arena was not the sound of a country giving up. It was the sound of thousands of people who still recognize exactly what they are looking at. That is the torch, still lit. And as long as we keep handing it to one another, it does not go out.
